Alien: Romulus Xenomorph analysis and comparison
Dark Nebula
StaffNeomorphApr-13-2024 12:42 PMA few days ago, a better look at the Romulus Xenomorph from the poster was discovered via IMDb ads, thanks to CulkyKyle on X.
Comparison with the 1979 Big Chap
The Romulus Xenomorph has lots of similarities to the 1979 Big Chap. Notably, it has a smooth domed carapace with a skull visible underneath, #teamskull.
Much like the Big Chap, the Romulus Xenomorph also appears to have a spinal back horn, and a thin tube connecting to its jaw.
The shoulder tubes on a Romulus Xenomorph are quite different from those on Big Chap. They look closer to the shoulder tubes of a Runner from Alien 3, at least to me.
*July 13, 2024 Edit: The Romulus xenomorph does have digitigrade legs. Smaller tubes on its back, a barrel chest, loose fingers not conjoined, and an awesome-looking tail.

MemberFacehuggerAug-05-2024 10:48 AMthere are tons of TV spots with different languages and each one showing a few brand new footage. I kind of think they are revealing too much but at the same time I am excited. All these scenes look amazing and very Alien Isolation like.

We get a look at the practical chest-burster, and as suspected, there's more than 1 Xenomorph.

MemberChestbursterAug-08-2024 12:01 PMCGI in all glory but practical effect xenos are still superior imo. There's something even more creepy with their slower, stiffer movements and robotic animatronics as opposed to lightning quick, tension-killing xenos and neos where you almost can't tell what's going on.

Alien: Romulus's early reactions are positive.
Folks say the third act is crazy, like you think it's all over but then boom, stress goes through the roof. I'm beyond excited.

CGI when given enough time can look spectacular (Planet of the Apes 2011-2024 films), but a lot of times it looks mid to bad because VFX/CGI artists aren't given enough time and room to breathe in. The same thing goes for practical effects, when done right it looks spectacular. If not, it can look goofy, at least in my own opinion.

MemberChestbursterAug-10-2024 3:13 PMDefinitely. Both have their pros and cons affected by time, budget and/or talent for the craft but if I had to pick between only CGI or practical xenos I'd prefer the latter given how effective it works in the alien franchise. I do however prefer polished and convincing CGI spaceship scenes and 3D backdrops compared to models and matte paintings despite the nostalgic charm. From all the the bits and pieces I've gathered so far about Romulus, it seems to be right up my alley. 4 days left! If the release date is August 16th for you I'll let you know how the experience was in a spoiler-free first impression post!
