MemberOvomorphNov-23-2013 11:29 PMSo I happened to catch Prometheus again (for like the 67th time at this point) on Cinemax, and something clicked in my head. If Holloway hadn't been so impatient, they would have been expected to take a look around, slowly cruising around the perimeter of the flat area with the road and examining the domes while within the ship. I am assuming it had this slow cruising capability from the way it landed.
Had they done so, they would have seen clearly the skull on top of the dome. But the position they landed in, they couldn't see it from the ship because they were orthogonal to its face--and by the time they drove up to it, they were too close given the curve of the dome to look up from ground level and see it.
If they had seen the skull, that might have given them pause.

That's a good question . Did they notice the skull on the dome ?? When they arrive at the temple the camera pans up to the skull and then someone asks : (I think shaw) prometheus are you seeing this ????
Was that perhaps what she meant ??

MemberOvomorphNov-24-2013 2:41 AMGreat post Wintermute, nobody ever dwells on that aspect of the film. There should've been a more tentative exploratory approach to the planet's features and some form of dialogue where all the mysterious artifacts they encounter are discussed - as any space explorer quite rightly would question these things. All the more reason for the film's pace to have been much slower, much longer and to hell with the studio decisions to pander to the no-brainers who can't sit through a dose of cerebral matter for even a minute.

MemberPraetorianNov-24-2013 11:18 AMHi Wintermute!
When the crew set out for the second time to find Millburn and Fifield, David is on his own and stops some distance from the dome to look at the 'skull', with a slightly puzzled expression, as he hadn't noticed it on the first drive to the dome.
It was more face-like when the crew approached it for the first time, then after the atmosphere in the ampule room was changed, and the storm set off, the resulting dust, silicon particles etc, can be seen stripping it away until only the skull remains. Death has been set in motion!

MemberOvomorphNov-24-2013 1:16 PMI don't think seeing the skull would have seriously given them pause. They would have looked at and expressed some concern, some more seriously than others such as Fifield who freaked out when he saw the dead bodies, but they were archaelogists and they as a rule are not afraid of either skulls or remains.

One of the interesting things about this expedition...only Shaw and Charlie are willing participants to find Aliens. The rest of them are there for MONEY. One should expect things to not be done properly. Just another day at work, time to hit up the helmet bong. I'd bug out too in those creepy dark caves where those walls just don't seem right. But still Archeologists seeing a human skull on top of the dome structure to which there are 5 of them in a line...one would think they would be a little more cautious. Maybe thinking Death worship and boobie traps! The giant stone head in partial biomorphic alteration is near the center of the structure which hints of rebirth? I wonder if there is a connection between the stone head and the severed head of the Engineer...perhaps sacrificial.

MemberChestbursterNov-26-2013 10:34 AMGreat point about everyone being there for money alone Ruhanyia! That's something, to me, that dismisses the critical point that the sceintitsts were all being so stupid! it's because they only wanted their money! Yeah i remember seeing the skull on the dome the first time i watched Prometheus in the theater and I really noticed it and hoped it had an importnt part in the film. but the pacing didn't leave for any exterior exploring i guess
