The Old Man Of Storr & The Seed Shaped Mothership.

The Elders ship is not a conventional disc/saucer. The shape is more elliptical. It mirrors The Old Man Of Storr formation, on the Isle of Skye sequence. Is that more than just a coincidence?

Concept artist Steve Messing refers to it as The Pebble. During the scene it appears to change shape. The gargantuan ship looks absolutely amazing and trippy. Beginning as a saucer, once upright it appears to be seed shaped. Wholly appropriate, given that the purpose of the Engineer being dropped off was in order to seed a planet.

It would be really funny to assume, engineers are so much stupid that the left one of their miniature elliptical spaceship in earth.

Have you noticed there have not been any designs/production drawings/ images released of this vehicle other than stills from the movie? It a almost seems to change shape, between the various angles its shot from, which is brilliantly trippy and yes, it appears to actually be seed shaped.

Now that's a good point Major Noob!

Perhaps it morphs slightly, changing from more circular when hovering or landing, to a more upright, aerodynamic seed shape as it rises into the atmosphere?

Or...Ridley realised he could make the ascending ship Storr shaped, purely as a visual cue!

@Engineer1337.....

Look very closely during your next viewing of PROMETHEUS. Watch as the seed shaped ship ascends, then on present day Skye we see the same shape in rock formation.

My point being was this done for aesthetic reasons, or is it meant to have more meaning?

@Lone I've never seen the seed shape image shown here, where is this from? regardless the main purpose of the trippy movement of the craft is meant to imply that the ship operates without a FTL propulsion system....implying technological advancement... thats it. I feel like this thread is attempting to say that humans made monuments to the leaving ship or something?

It's definitely not out of the question. Why wouldn't there be an ancient reference to the ship, especially near one of the star maps? This is where the Jesus idea could work for me, they were fairly regular visitors but our religion, being fractured basically by the individuality they cultivated into new forms, overtook their legend. I'm not saying though that this is the source of their " anger" at us, that's just Shaw's simple mind arriving at the most obvious conclusion. I don't think they were mad. Possibly horrified, but not mad. I could see that vehicle becoming a cult symbol, thousands of years prior. I love that ship more every time I see it. I love the way it sort of slid on a bed of antigravity, it was never really still, just mammoth in that cold mist, bleak and vast, its movement giving it more personality than many more visually arresting Sci Fi vehicles. And when it turns upright it looks briefly like a living thing. Also much like an erection, which I'm sure was also no mistake.

@Ellen Ripley’s Xenomorph IPA

Thanks for your contribution, that image is in the recent additions to the gallery. It’s a concept piece by Steve Messing.

Ridley Scott chooses his locations very deliberately therefore, we can be certain it’s no accident that he used that particular part of Skye. I’m just fascinated by the prologue & it’s dark beauty. It’s my favourite scene & I find myself drawn to it & tend to watch it repeatedly!

I noticed the similarity between the ship & the rock formation & am interested to read the ideas of other members about this scene. We can all watch the same imagery but see things differently. That’s what makes being part of this site so enjoyable & I always relish reading other members ideas.

My dear Major Noob, I always appreciate your thinking, the ship is indeed very phallic!

Trust you won’t mind me stealing your name for the Mothership? :D

Lone- not at all! In fact, I'd like to propose a new name for that vehicle: The Noobernaut.
