MemberOvomorphApr-26-2013 4:38 PMok so there is this one guy i have been arguing for months with about if Prometheus was good or not, he thinks its the worst of the series, and i think its slightly above average. right now he is INSISTING that the space jocky in the beginning, the snake, and the squid were all CGI and i have been telling him that A: thats not a bad thing and B: they are actually all real makeup and electronics! i remember seeing clips of them making the hammerpede and the space jockies, and i am sure there are clips of them making everything else, but i cant find them on youtube, and i dont see them on the site (i will search again when this is posted) so can you guys help me find the videos i am looking for? thanks :D

MemberFacehuggerApr-26-2013 8:39 PMI think to nail this down properly is to take everything in parts, rather than try everything at once. So firstly, what are referring to when we say space jockey at the beginning. The beginning of what and where exactly. Do we mean Alien or Prometheus. Lets be very exact about this, because in Alien it was a artifact created by Giger himself.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2013 9:59 PMi am referring to the sacrifice scene in the beginning of Prometheus, and all the other creatures in the movie. obviously the engineer disintegrating was CG but he thinks the entire creature was. dont worry, i have plenty of pictures lol but that might not be enough, thats why i came here looking for videos :P

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2013 10:16 PMIf you can get a copy of 'The furious Gods', that is the complete and I do mean complete documentary on Prometheus. It came with the Blue Ray edition but can be found on line. More I will not say regarding locations. Just for your info and not his because you will need video evidence for that and as I said all of that can be found on the documentary, the engineer who sits in the chair towards the end is a live over 7 ft actor named Ian Wythe, the hammerpede is a real puppet with lots of cables leading to hand controls but his mouth was CGI since that part required more subtle movements than were possible with the hand controls. The small squid was all robotic like the hammerpede, but the large one was CGI other than the scenes through the window which showed the arm only, which was physically controlled by extras who threw it up against the window with as great a force as they could muster.

MemberOvomorphApr-26-2013 10:33 PMNostromo- they did make a full size and very detailed model of the Trilobite, though to what extent it was used in filming I don't know. But I do remember an interview I think with Weta that talked about the CGI overlays they did with the Trilobite in particular to render it more lifelike.

MemberOvomorphApr-27-2013 12:34 AMRight you are Shambhala, they only made the life sized model in order to do the CGI overlays. They discussed the difficulty that Ian Wythe had when acting the last scene with something that wasn't present.

MemberOvomorphApr-27-2013 4:04 AMnostromo yes you are right about the trilobite and certainly most of the scenes with the Engineer were with actors like Ian Whyte, but there is a short moment in which they seem to use CGI.

MemberOvomorphApr-27-2013 11:55 AMRight Shambhala. They used sticks to support the life sized puppet and then CGI mostly to remove the sticks from the images. Regarding the extending mouth I am not 100 percent sure of how much was CGI and how much may have been remote controlled. I know that they tried to do everything using actual footage whenever possible and then only use CGI if necessary as RS always does.

MemberPraetorianApr-29-2013 11:17 AMHi invaderzim!
Whoever you have been "arguing with for months" obviously knows very little about Ridley Scott & his approach to filmaking.
Doug Trumbull gave Ridley a great piece of advice on Bladerunner; "Can you do it for real? If so, do it for real".
Ridley & co certainly did it for real with the creature effects on Prometheus & indeed used CGI for enhancement. As Nostromo stated, 'The Furious Gods' shows in epic detail how everything was achieved.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2013 7:25 PMIf I may?
#1 - If arguing or even debating "for months" (on end?) whether it is 'good or not,' is not worth arguing over IMO, since most if not all opinions regarding Prometheus is subjective, and a matter of taste or perspective.
#2 - "Don't Feed The Trolls" and there certainly plenty
#3 - Yes, and by all means show him/her CarrotNaan's link to FB - you can at least establish a compelling point regarding CGI

MemberNeomorphMay-03-2013 6:57 PMFrom what i've seen in the documentaries, the sacrificial engineer and Bob are real men in make-up. The snake and the squid and the deacon are puppets. Ridley won't use CGI unless he has no other choice..because.............................................It's crap!!!
The poster was good though!
