MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:13 PMCould it be possible? Could Dr. Holloway have been suffering from penis envy? David 8 is the ultimate android while Holloway is just a man, what was his profession anyway cause I find it strange an archaeologist can read cave paintings but not have a clue when it comes to ancient text or something similar.
When David rescued Dr Holloway during the "razor" storm I saw Holloway give him the side eye. Why would he feel threatened by a robot besides the obvious reasons, David still doesn't have a soul.

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:28 PMWell, then Holloway does berate Shaw for her actions in front of everyone! David then simply asks Shaw if she is Ok. She thanks David for asking, directly in Holloway's face... as if to imply "at least someone is concerned with my wellbeing."
Looks like powerplay abound...

MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:40 PMHe was also being very kind to her when she first awakend from hypersleep.......and his manner while watching her dream, seemed more tender than simple observation by a soulless toaster.

MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:46 PMThere was very little reason to like or empathize with Holloway in this movie. He was a poorly written, one dimensional character with little or no depth. His digs at David being Pinocchio were juvenile. While Vickers also treated David like shit, at least she treated everyone the same.
On the other hand, David was hard to figure out and his motives were unclear - a much more interesting character.

MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:49 PMHolloway seems very insecure and reckless, while David is VERY sure and careful.
They have a few little verbal skirmishes. Like when he asks how his language lessons are coming along. David says he thinks he should be able to speak to them, assuming that Holloway's thesis is correct. Holloway is probably already insecure because his girlfriend is an intellectual genius which he certainly is not. He didn't like losing that to a robot, and he becomes quite petty over it.
When they land on LV-223 He tells the captain to instruct the away team to suit up, and addresses David as "boy" in a demeaning manner.
And in the ready room, he starts another little jibe. "Why do you wear a helmet. You don't breathe." David, who is not supposed to care that he is artificial, does realise that he is being looked down on because of it.
He says that "you people" are more comfortable. ("you people" was said by Roy Batty in Bladerunner, in the "Tears in Rain" speech...
When Holloway says "they make you guys pretty close"
David's response is "not too close, I hope" and Holloway seems too simple minded to get the double meaning behind that.
David knows a lot, and says little. I'm sure he noticed what I noticed before the sand storm. Holloway and Shaw travelled from the ship to the dome in one of those little trucks.
On the way back they have a Space Jockey head in a bag, with a massive stormfront closing in.
They take a quadbike... Holloway driving... Shaw in back, and the head sitting on the luggage rack. That seems to be rather stupid. When the head falls off the back, Shaw goes to get it and gets blown away.
He shouts at her when they are rescued, probably out of more insecurity about how it happened in the first place.
Who exactly was careless? Which one of them decided to drive a quadbike instead of get into a truck?

MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 7:59 PMThere is implicit diparagement in addressing any group as: "you people." And yeah, "not too close, I hope" was his best line.

actually, I think the truck had taken off at that point, but all excellent points you bring up. The Batty reference you bring up is especially interesting.
The other being the engineer caressing David's head before pulling it off.

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 8:04 PMPerhaps David is just polite due to his programing?

yeah he slipped Holloway a mickey alright. But then he did a few good deeds afterwards, so go figure ;)
holy crap, that's a funny avatar! at first I thought it was Tom Jones channeling Gene Simmons. Then I looked closer and it's even better!

I don't buy for a moment, that every action David takes, is due to either his programming, or what Weyland told him to do.....but that's just me.
Hadley's Hope
MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 8:14 PM@artyoh, David is starting to exceed his programming. I think that's a central theme for a few life forms in this riddle.

MemberOvomorphJun-12-2012 8:20 PMWell, Shaw's character arc more than gives Ripley's a run for her money, that's for sure. I don't mind telling you, I'm already totally psyched for a movie with these two characters.
