MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 6:35 PMThanks to 20thcenturybuick for giving me the idea.
Prometheus is the name of the movie and of the ship in the film. Also worth considering is the Greek Titan origin of the name Prometheus. Prometheus made mankind out of clay and gave him fire. Zeus ordered the creation of Pandora, the first woman, when he learned of man's possession of fire stolen by Prometheus. Pandora was delivered to the younger brother of Prometheus as a bride. Here's the cool part:
"When he had received her into his house, Pandora opened the pithos (storage jar) which Zeus had given her as a wedding present, and released the swarm of evil spirits trapped within. They would ever afterwards plague mankind."
See the connection to the movie's plot?

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 7:03 PMPerhaps Peter Wayland is Hephaestus, the Greek Titan who created Pandora, who also fashioned himself a wheeled chair (remember the shot of Shaw falling to her knees with an elderly man seated in a wheel chair in the background?)
Hephaetus (third paragraph)

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 7:09 PMThat's interesting because there was something about the way Weyland was standing during his speech that seemed off to me. His feet were pointed out like he was doing an imitation of Charlie Chaplin. I wonder if he is Hephaetus.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 9:25 PMPandora's story is also a lot like Eve biting the apple of knowledge given to her by the Serpent, and then getting the humans kicked out of the garden of Eden/Paradise/The mythological golden age. I strongly believe Ridley and co. are making this all about every myth possibly conceived of having parallels, but focusing on the Prometheus stuff because of the fire equaling technology. I absolutely love the viral video and some of the things Lindelof said about it.
Eve is created to be Adam's mate from Adam's rib, taken by the angels under God's order, with Adam being God's first creation of humans. Angels, i.e. Titans/the actual engineers do the work of the Gods and are already present during the creation. I don't mean to offend, many have noted that the bible has many parallels with world mythologies, but it can be interpreted that at first Adam couldn't reproduce as he was the first of his kind, or was possibly already Asexual because the genetic material used to create Eve is taken from Adam's rib to make his companion...
This is somewhat comparable to androids not being able to reproduce naturally as a creation of man, as well as Weyland's desire to create artificial life based on preexisting life, in a more general sense. That is to say Weyland is now acting in accordance with the gods as if he were almost one of them, like an angel, or a Titan, and creating new life as the companion of humans.
I think all of this is particularly relevant because Lindelof just mentioned the tree of knowledge from the Garden of Eden when answering questions about the the viral video.
"This was about the ideas that he wanted to convey, and he did not want to come back and do science fiction again unless there was some kind of a philosophical construct to it. That’s why Blade Runner, which didn’t really enjoy commercial success when it first came out, is viewed as a classic, and is still being discussed and dissected: there are these fundamental ideas about humanity, our relationship with technology, the presence of a soul — those are all the things that drive Blade Runner. Ridley was reaching for the fruit on the tree of knowledge in the ideas that he was having about this movie."
Weyland may represent the lame Titan Hephaestus with access to a godly forge, but he may also represent the tree of knowledge rather than the actual serpent. The serpent comes later. The serpent class is probably related to our god race in the film, or Zeus in the Greek myths, but could have been a rogue angel or Titan that upset the gods by sharing the fruit off the tree of knowledge... this definitely brings to mind Prometheus stealing the fire. Someone who left behind a dangerous gift from off the tree of knowledge for our Eve/Pandora character to open/bite, which upsets the gods, and will get us thrown out of Paradise again, unleashing terrible things on us as per Pandora's box.

MemberOvomorphFeb-29-2012 5:50 AMYeah it's pretty obvious that there will be similarities between this movie and the Prometheus myth. I.e Humans interfering with Space Jockey stuff, and we're to assume they're a godlike species. So yes, I can see why/how it all ties in together. . .

MemberOvomorphFeb-29-2012 6:54 AMPurely speculation: But also we're told Weyland's mother was a professor of comparative mythology at Oxford, and we can see that he got his affinity for mythology and engineering from his parents. I think that in the video in 2023 Weyland's already developed his own beliefs that a lot of the ancient myths line up (in reality they were most likely just passed around from culture to culture) and Weyland secretly believes they actually happened all around the Earth, leading into the alien astronaut stuff that they choose to connect in the movie.,
I think the way Pearce acts, and carries himself, in the video is deliberate & subtly conveys that he already fully believes the Gods walked the Earth in the past, and is being more literal than the crowd knows when he says that humans are becoming the gods now. He's already on the path that will help him fund his endeavors, but I believe he was taking some myths too literally and expecting some of the clues to be uncovered by his archaeological teams rather quickly.
In short, he already knows something that leads him to where the coordinates to the alien world are found... but it will take a longer time than what his confidence levels indicate in 2023. He knows he can develop the synthetics, and will deliver on that, so he's partially genuine, but acting as if he's hiding something, or has some great secret he's holding and alluding to with his talk of the gods and Prometheus; that he's still unsure of but very inspired and eager to explore.
I believe he's already found something-- possibly something physical from a prior dig, but it'll take until whatever is found during the archaeological discovery in the beginning of the film to figure out where he's going.
These investors are unknowingly, indirectly funding his later Prometheus mission. He's throwing it in their faces. Probably has the ship named already.
I'm thinking he's so smug because he knows he can deliver the synthetics, and that will make the company skyrocket ahead of the competition, bringing in more cash so he can continue to fund his secret endeavors. He also believes he can make himself immortal.
What they uncover at the start of the film allows him to continue his quest to become like the gods. It's him that pieces things together, and brings in Shaw knowing he'll need someone with Archaeological expertise for the mission. I think we see shades of his beliefs(not fully revealed) in Shaw and Shaw's Father: a missionary who stumbles upon something ancient in Africa that's quickly picked up on by the Weyland corp. The dig site is excavated for years with the father getting involved because of startling religious/mythological implications that inspires young Shaw to later continue believing in God(s), and this man...Weyland. By the time Shaw grows up she's a part of the Prometheus crew as we catch up with Weyland in 2073.
