MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 8:56 PMI just saw this post from a reviewer and it made me laugh that Covenant was last. Personally, I put Covenant tied with Resurrection and Prometheus with the AVP2, then AVP last.
Can't really recommend it even when it could just be a throw-away Alien film to watch on Netflix in a few months. Maybe they'll have the non- ultimate-extended-special-director's cut that the studio meddled with to see. Now THAT, I would've rather seen.
***
Final thoughts: Since I did just watch (now) all 8 films, here's how I'd rank them:
1. Aliens (Director's Cut)
2. Alien (Theatrical Cut)
3. Alien3 (Director's Cut)
4. Prometheus
5. Alien: Resurrection (Theatrical Cut)
6. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
7. Alien vs. Predator
8. Alien: Covenant

2 Aliens (not directors cut simply because the sequence showing the girl's parents getting killed early on ruins the discovery of her to me)
3 There are no other ALIEN films. ;)

MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 9:06 PMI am watching the Aliens Director's cut now and the scenes that show Ripley's daughter, the automated weapons killing the Aliens and the extended board meeting added some good context.
With Newt's father getting attacked by a facehugger, it was just good to see the derelict again from the first movie.

MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 9:40 PM@Spellbound - Covenant coming in at #2?? lol. Did you work on the movie? lol

MemberNeomorphMay-20-2017 9:45 PMPhallic Jaw It might sound rediculous to rank Avp higher than Covenant. But to me Covenant makes a huge mistake in moving away from sci-fi straight into fantasy territory. A franchise can recover from a bad movie, but it won't recover from one that so drastically switches genres and objectives.

MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 10:38 PMLol. No, not anybody who liked the film (I didn't DISlike it, it just infuriated me), but just saying that anybody who would put it above a great movie (not just a great Alien movie but a GREAT movie) like Aliens is a bit much. Sorry but for one, Aliens did the whole "blow it out of the airlock" thing much better, and also "get away from her you bitch" was better than "I got you, you son of a bitch" and if you disagree, you're wrong :-P
And Batty's "that's the spirit!" was better than Div'Ed's too! But I digress.

MemberOvomorphMay-20-2017 11:01 PMSo opinions are now facts huh Phallic Jaw?
Anyway here's my list
Aliens
Alien
Alien: Covenant
Prometheus
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection
Alien vs. Predator
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
Note: The only film on my list that I dislike is AVP: Requiem as Alien Resurrection and Alien vs. Predator are my two biggest guilty pleasure films. As for the three Predator films I like all three but IMO the Alien films are way better.

MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 11:22 PMHaha Jurassic, not at all. Hence my cheeky smiley at the end. ;-) But it works both ways doesn't it? Although I do believe the majority of people in the world would consider Aliens to be far superior, to be honest. Still just mere opinions, but do the opinions of the many not count?

We have a saying in my country which translates, the taste is like your ass, divided. Having that said we all have our own personal preferences and anyone that has read my posts on this forum know that I love Aliens, but it has a couple of fundamental flaws in the context of the entire franchise such as turning the aliens into space ants. For me AC tries to be different and original but at the same time connect to the first movie. Very hard to do, but I think they did it very well. So my divided asscheeks are smiling :)

MemberFacehuggerMay-20-2017 11:52 PMALIEN - Masterpiece. This is the creation, everything of it is original and never seen before.
ALIENS/ ALIEN 3 - Same rank for me. Personally Alien3 is important to me. I really love its tone that David Fincher set up. Its transition from ALIENS is beautiful.
James Cameron's version is unbeatable, it's a rollercoaster ride.
ALIEN COVENANT - Maybe it's honeymoon effect. I am even surprised I rank this quite high.
ALIEN RESURRECTION - I enjoy this one a lot, it's quirky, unique. Full of styles, and it's from AMELIE director hello, I love this guy.
PROMETHEUS - This film keeps growing on me. I appreciate it creates a whole new universe for the Alien saga.
I don't consider AVPs are part of the franchise, they are entertaining to watch though.
All Alien films are great, but Sir Ridley is the best.

MemberOvomorphMay-21-2017 4:08 AM1/Aliens. Brilliant action, brilliant horror - brilliant characters.
2/ Alien Covenant. Horror, shock, explanation to some degree. Good character build up with David.
3/ Alien. Nothing needs to be said.
4/ Alien vs Predator. A fair effort..
5/ Prometheus. Nonsensical opening scene and confused writing. Even the director doesn't know what the film means in parts.
6=/ Alien Resurrection. Stupid story, stupid designs, stupid characters. A potential franchise killer it was so bad.
6=/ Alien 3. Another potential franchise killer. Poorly written, poorly directed - stupid characters and poor cgi. Should be studied at university on how not to make a movie.

MemberFacehuggerMay-21-2017 7:02 AMI am with Phallic on this one. If you guys think Alien Covenant comes at number two; then either, 1) You have a different bar than we do and 2) Can I assume, you did not see Alien to Alien3 in the movie theater? What I am trying to convey is that different generations usually have different tastes based on their experiences/exposure. Makes sense?

MemberOvomorphMay-21-2017 7:27 AM@colonialsoldier. It might ironically be that those rating Alien a little lower than your expectations have seen the countless B movies before Alien that have carbon copied plots to Alien. Alien was done the best out of these previous copy and paste plots - no doubt - but for me, the majesty of Alien - lies more the extreme shocks (truly scary film) and the highly imaginative Giger designs. Alien Covenant has no peer. I can't remember an abundance of previous films depicting a broken human-built synthetic wiping out an alien civilisation with their own weapons and breeding the ultimate killing machine as a side project just afterwards - a beast that would haunt humans across the galaxy.. at the same time as trying to have sex with his human creators and writing music.. Just for its Madness - Alien Covenant stands out and Scott should be rightly proud.
colonialsoldier
MemberFacehuggerMay-21-2017 7:37 AMJust because it has no peer; does not mean the movie is on a greater level. I think Lindlelof and Logan's screenplay diversions of what the Alien universe is; breaks a logical rationale to the Alien origin. I never viewed the Alien as the "ultimate killing machine". It is just a viscous species (like the movie Species and the Blob) that can't reason and has no regard for anything else except its own. As a soldier myself, if you can kill something will a pistol or flamethrower; I will not label it ultimate in my book lol.
Wonder Boy
MemberOvomorphMay-21-2017 7:39 AMFor me it has no peer and is good for the reasons I carefully detailed. Alien Resurrection is fairly unique too - don't remember many films with its exact plot? Do you? But that doesn't stop it being at the bottom of the list.
Secondly as regards to your hierarchy of the ultimate killing machines - disease is actually still at the top. As a non soldier but someone who had to do basic military training - I can venture the Xenomorph idea is more marketable and this franchise is about money - not trying to deconstruct someone's view on the watchability of a film on whether Ash and the others were wrong about the xenomorph being the ultimate killing machine.
