HAG - Welcome to SCIFIED! It is always quite agreeable to see new faces! As for you topic: I certainly feel that you are asking the right questions! Indeed; it is quite obvious that we are missing a large chunk of information with regards to the Engineers and their plans. However, perhaps that is part of the draw the Alien/Prometheus universe holds for us fans - the mystery and mystique! I would greatly enjoy knowing the true secrets held behind the brief glimpses we have had. Yet a part of me would feel saddened for having the unknown brought forward into knowledge. In the long run, I feel that it is much more engaging and entertaining to speculate and wonder - to have conversations like these!

This is what I really want to know about the engineers.  It's about their relationship with the goo.  At the beginning of Prometheus they apparently use the goo to seed life. They seems to have control of the goo, they seem to know what they're doing.

Why, then, in the future, do they loose control of the goo, and things go to pot on LV-233?  Something they'd had control of for (possibly) millenia?  

HAG - I am very pleased that you have finally chosen to begin making your own posts here! Judging by the content of your first addition to these conversations, it is obvious that you have quite a few compelling thoughts and can articulate them very nicely (I greatly enjoy the way you added imagery in the midst of your paragraphs to help detail your thoughts)! I hope to see more in the future! You are certainly correct with regards to the thought-provoking nature of the Alien/Prometheus universe; we will likely be hypothesising and speculating for years! :)

DROP YOUR LINEN - Now that is a very interesting question - one which I and a few others here have attempted to decode for quite some time! I happen to believe that the "black goo" is psycoreactive - having the ability to be manipulated through thought and emotion. However, it is an incredibly unstable and therefore dangerous tool. Being partially alive and attuned to a staggering degree to the emotional and mental output of living organisms, its creative capacity can quickly give way to nightmarish results. I believe (and this is simply my own hypothesis) that when the Engineers' emissary to mankind was slain, the mental and emotional turmoil that ran rampant through their people was "interpreted" by the black goo as a creative impulse - one that ultimately gave rise to the horrors that wiped them out on LV-233. I certainly hope this theory helps to put some of your question into perspective! If anything, it is extremely fun to converse and speculate! :)

If you want some insight and answers from me and my answers are only my interpretations but i have studdied this Movie to Death lol  both on screen and extras and all things including concept works, drafts you name it ;)  I can practically remember the Entire Movie off my head Shot for Shot lol

I was going to make a Thread Called.... Ask Dave!  where you can ask my a Question about a certain part of the movie... and i will answer it in a few ways.

1) What we are shown on screen....

Indeed i was going to work on a Re-Write of Lindeloffs Draft and well the entire Movie on Screen inc scnes shot and not used... into a New DRAFT that would be more detailed, cover some Ambigious stuff but not Spoon Fed, and will touch up some of the Silly Scenes and Pacing and also add few bits from Spaights draft and Ultimately Aim to give a Re-write of the movie that Fans can read and visualize on screen that should given a much better Movie and the Movie this could have been...

But i have been busy with other half done projects.....  like i abandoned my Prometheus 2 Paradise draft, as ran into a few Problems mainly regarding Paradise, Engineers Agenda and who created them and in what state Paradise is found etc as its a well very hard subject to cover and i had multiple different ideas..... the ideas for LV 223, slight Xeno Connections, Weyland-Yutani Merger where all straight forwards...  my ideas did have some very very interesting ideas...

But i stopped work on it, seemed to misplaced or lost some of it...

I am also as far as brain storming, working on TWO Alternative Alien Sequels... yep Two new movie ideas that do not take Alien 3 and Alien R out and dont bring Ripley back.... something new and fresh...  as i feel Blomkamps is going to be another Alien R Popcorn Flick Meets AVPR in the year 2180-2200 minus Predators...

What you touch upon is indeed, similar to what i have always thought of...  our Engineers and if we are ignore the Full Sacrifcial Scene, then our Engineers (not Elders) do indeed appear to maybe be unable to procreate?  Maybe they can or cant who knows... Ridley said its not the only way they can create life but just the way they choose to do it.... but its a very very long process and i dont want to go into detail about it, but its not a Fast Paced Evolution to Mankind like Spaights Draft.  I can go into detail if you wish...

The Xeno link and Why is odd, and well i have a handful of theories, because well one is not enough but they are all similar..... and so yes we do not know what role the Xeno plays...  its very open...

The broad strokes is that the Engineers use it as a Bio-Weapon and Tool to Clean up Worlds, so that there is a clean slate to Start Creation again... but we cant be sure if the Xeno was created for this purpose, from scratch or if its something they found and experimented on, which seems to fit in with the ideas in Star Beast..

To Continue with Shaw being unable to bare offspring, then yes your idea is pretty much what i have covered a number of times, it is my theory too....

I will try in a nutshell......

Engineers are Gardners they may do this on behalf of some other race for some purpose...  but we see that they created life, seeded worlds, came back to upgrade and re-evolve life....   

These Engineers used their DNA as the basis to create life in their image using their Base DNA......  they persue the Agenda of creating more better and perfect Organisms but they can not reproduce themselves via Sex etc..

At some point or for what ever reason, the Engineers or a Faction became infected with a Organism related to the Xeno... this produce a Chest Buster.... The Engineers maybe only LV 223 but also maybe others too, saw this Process as a Perverted Miracle just as Shaws Pregnancy was...

Our Engineers could not procreate and create life from within like a Female can... but following a Face Hugging they did, and this result allowed the Engineers to GIVE BIRTH to Life, and Life that produced something very interesting,  a New Organism that had traits of the Engineers but also something else, it produced a Organism that Evolved the best Traits of the Engineers.

If not the Miracle of giving Birth to create life this way, was not in itself suprising and fascinating the Result was Equally Miraculous to the Engineers.

In their typical persuit of creating many kinds of life and evolving life, like the Borg in Star Trek... in peruit of using the Best Technology from Species it encountered, this Engineers saw this Creation as something Devine, they continued to experiment with the DNA creating variations until at one point.... BINGO!  The MURAL Deacon is created.

They had created finally New Life that was Perfect... its DNA was considered more Special than the Engineers, and they decided via Sacrifical Goo to break down these Deacons DNA and store them in the Urns as a New DNA to Seed Worlds with.

No longer was Engineer DNA seen as the Perfect Base for Life, now the Deacons DNA is seen as the Natural Evolution to their DNA and thus replaces using their own.

I have a more detailed few on this, and yes however this theory i also have some problems that do not match and this is mainly how the Juggernaughts  and Space Jockey Suits seem to be connected to the Xeno and indeed the creature in the Fresco...  for that however again i do seem to be led to the Engineer gaining their Bio-Tech from reverse Engineering of something they found.

As far as our Engineers Purpose.. well my friend this would take a lot of explanation i would cover the base points we know and try leave out what we have not been shown as of yet...

1) Our Engineers are a Humanoid Race that are Ancient and posses Technology and Tools of creation that are beyond what we can imagine, these Engineers seem to follow some kind of Hierarchy, and order of creation, they can be looked at as Angels or Titans/Annunaki or Olympians/Igigi.   i.e their could be some other higher race above them we have yet to see.

The Purpose of these Engineers is to go around and Seed Life on Worlds, they also visit and watch over creations and we do not know the purpose or Agenda for this.  But  they play the role of Galactic Genetic Gardeners.

2) The movie implies that they or a faction of them had played the part in creation of complex Life on Earth and Ultimately the creation of Mankind, and we was visted by them and taught things, given Technology and upgraded not only Genetically, but also Technologically over thousands of years.

We either worshiped them as Gods, or they had us Worship them as Gods...  They may have set up LV 223 as a Watchtower to Watch over us from afar.... LV 223 being a Greenhouse they would test and created Life that when they was happy with the resuls they would come to Earth to then Plant and Seed such life.

3) There was a certain point in time when things went bad for the relationship with Mankind or maybe their own creators, something which led to them experimenting on a whole host of Organisms and for some purpose they intended this on us, for what reason we dont know...

Maybe they grew disfavoured with their creation, like a Child who is bored of his Lego Creation but lacks enough Bricks to create more, and so he has to break down his old creation to create something new.

At some point Mankind had upset the Engineers, or our creation or the knowledge of our creation had upset something within the Hierarchy that led to us having to be destroyed... was this as a Punishment to the Engineers for our creation, did they intend to hide what they had done.... or was they aware of us and thought was was becoming to rebelious....

We just cant be sure.. as its very open..

4) We are left with this Place LV 223 which we do not know its full purpose as far as Originally, was it a Waystation to watch over us and practice Genetic Research on a Plant Nursery before Planting the Buds into the Garden? Was it always a place of research to create Bio Weapons... we can be 100% sure...

But what we are left with is a place that contains a Bio-Logical Mass of Urns that can be used to Evolve Life into something new, that is related somehow to the Xeno and events of LV 426 but we do not fully have a 100% failsafe explantion or theory to this.

Just that for somepart the Xeno and these Urns are related and they are intended as either Destruction... or either to clear up a World (Evolve/Replace in the case of the Urns).

Some of this is touching on the links to mountains of madness which has been discussed before. It just happens to be on a podcast on the iplayer in the UK right now and I never totally got round to finding out what it was about but its deffinatly got eldars in it and things much like the engineers called Shoggoths which are basically engineered lifeforms that are bread to do the bidding of the elders. There is allot of stuff thats different to prometheus but allot thats the same I do wonder how same it will be in the end. The Shoggoths kill the elders in the end after becoming more independent over the years and gaining intelligence so if you were to put that into prometheus the engineer at the start was highly trained and under the guidance of the elders I guess were as possibly later on they lost the control after becoming independent and so messed things up. There’s even a bit were it says: “a black, bubbling mass, which they identify as a Shoggoth” and an unspeakable evil hiding in a larger mountain possibly like a demi god or something...anyway not heard the ending yet but its got many links...there are also many races battling with the elders something I think we may see some of with prometheus. Anyway I know they can take any direction but interesting anyway...

I wonder if we will see this demi god or work that it had done on the elder home planet – tortured elders and engineers possibly unimaginable evil keeping them alive for hundreds, thousands or millions of years in pain or madness etc. :S ...
