MemberOvomorphJun-19-2013 9:51 PMI hear ya man.
Fifield bugs me the most- especially after seeing what could have been!!! I love some of the concept art/ early visions for Fifield, they were so Alien-esque and terrifying. Also, Fifield smoking weed was absolutely retarded. (And i say this as a pot smoker)
My issues with Prometheus end there, as i chalk up 'stupid characters' as being by Peter Weyland's design. These people all had some fatal flaw that made them either perfect guinea pigs or easily manipulated. This is why they were selected and told as little as possible. (See Chance's comment to Ravel "this is a Corporate run, they aren't telling us shit")
But i digress; YES i cannot stop watching!! My problems are basically only with Fifield, but still- i have watched this movie....
NO JOKE - 49 times- and i can't stop!! (I have been noting each viewing on my phone, where, when and on what so i don't forget)
It has been a long year (Prometheus came out on my birthday, June 7th here in Canada) and i have been looking forward to getting to 50 for sooooo long!!!
(See past posts and note the slow count up)
I love you all and after i bring my beautiful wife to work, i will begin my 50th viewing!!
Here's to another year with you all, and another 50 times through!!!

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2013 9:57 PM@ Fleshvessel - you have seriously out-matched my 22 viewings! Bravo!
I am annoyingly in love with this film, and I'm glad people have such worthwhile discussions on this board!

MemberOvomorphJun-20-2013 4:34 AMYes you guys are the only ones who complain and whine about a scene that cannot be changed. I dont get you guys, I love the movie but but it had a weak characters dude do you know that Alien has the same thing. Its not weak you're over analyzing a movie like its Gone With The Wind or something get over it. Go to another forum if it bothers you so much. Its a great movie your just focusing on things like it was supposed to be perfect. No movie is perfect I dont care how much character development you put in a movie. Looks I am the only one who actually appreciates this movie. I like mysteries they keep you guessing and I guess you guys like being spoon fed everything. It was the first movie of the series you have to mave mystery for the other two to reveal whats really going on. I mean no offense but it keeps bugging me how people still look at it and go "I wanted more". Thats how I feel when reading these posts.
The Anunnaki were on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, mighty men of high reno

MemberOvomorphJun-20-2013 5:11 AMI don't think it is too much to have wanted a movie with logical character portrayals that were not simply random actions for the pure sake of moving the plot forward. As has been argued many a time....this was meant to be a major scientific mission - at least the illusion as such - and there were probably a large amount of investors aware of the mission. It would stand to reason Weyland corp would not hire complete morons in the fields of science. This is where the weak portrayals come in. Why would any archeologist, biologist, geologist remove their helmets on an alien world just because initial scans showed oxygen? They did not know of any alien microbes/bacterium/etc in the air. It was done simply as a device for plot movement. This is not to bring up the multitude of other issues of questionable character motivations by the supporting cast. One other example a lot of people had issue with when the movie first came out was Millburn freaking over the dead alien, but goes to pet a big ol' alien sname. There was a deleted scene, which, if left in, would have given more logic behind his actions towards the hammerpede.
As mentioned in the OP, I do not need to have every little thing spoon fed to myself and I do enjoy movies that make you think/discuss after the fact. However, there was no garauntee Prometheus 2 would be green lit, so having some, not all, plot elements not properly addressed in the first movie is a very risky move. If P2 was not given the go ahead, we would be left with a movie with too many unsatisfying answers/questions.
When Alein came out, all we had was the mystery/enigma of what the hell was the space jockey and what created these alien species? Yes Prometheus is a stand alone film in a shared universe, but it is quite clear RS wanted to address some of the origin questions.
To be honest, if the deleted/extended scenes had made the final cut of the movie, I think Prometheus would have been a much more powerful film. Those extra scenes hold the right amount of character and plot development. It is as if they took the parts that helped solidify the integrity of the cast, story, and director, and gave them the ol' cut for the theatre. IMO Prometheus suffers from Alien 3 syndrome in the vein of the directors cut (the deleted scenes etc) making the definitive version of the movie.

MemberOvomorphJun-20-2013 9:57 AMI'm with you, @Xeno - a scientific expedition such as this (meeting alien life forms for the first time) would have had clearly defined protocols involving contamination in both directions. Too many things have been left to our imaginations such as who are the original aliens, what does the green crystal do, etc.
@Anunnak1 suggests that Alien suffers from the same plot holes. I disagree. Alien didn't get all of its science right either but it DID provide more than enough suspense, surprise and outright horror. Giger has given many people nightmares and so did Alien - Prometheus not so much.

MemberFacehuggerJun-20-2013 10:06 AMI have watched Prometheus 3 times.
If I would watch it often, the magic of this film would disappear.

MemberDeaconJun-20-2013 10:09 AMWell right off the Bat....
Ridley Scot was up against it, lets face it even we had the best writers and best directors in the World there would always be a chance the movie would fail to live up to expectations..
Reason.... Well Alien was a Classic and it raised a very high Bar and the longer you leave it the more expectation is placed... And what does Prometheus harm in that area is its set to answer some Mystery of the Xeno, Space Jockey and Alien and as such has much more to live up to than it it was a Alien 5.
With a lot of movies that are true classics most times you do end up not meeting the expectations.... Predators was not a touch on Predator.
The new Robocop movie has big boots to fill as Robocop 1 was a classic....
The Thing was a hard act to follow and its prequel had some failings (mainly over use of poor CGI and last 20 min of the movie was well pants).
Its even worse when you got a classic that has no sequels.... such as ET even trying to touch ET is a poisonous chalice because its a movie that is near impossible to beat with a remake or sequel.

MemberDeaconJun-20-2013 10:29 AMBut for some of the failings of Prometheus we have to remember the potential scope of the movie franchise, and it has more to offer than just explain what the Xeno is and tie it in with Alien.
Here are a list of my Gripes with the Movie......
1) Goofy Acting and Characters that act out of Character and some Characters we just dont seem to care about....
But to be honest its not a major distraction. I mean was Aliens, and Alien 4 really a great use of Characters?
2) Inconsistencies in what they are trying to point out as the Black Goo and the Goo at the start of the movie.
I mean they are trying to imply that Holloway is not infected with Xeno DNA Goo and that this only occurs when the substances are mixed. Or they are trying to say its all the same?
Where as if so, we have to ask how does Holloway infect Shaw with contaminated Sperm that produce the Trilobite baby, and if its the same stuff the Sacrificial Engineer had taken then why does mankind not have Xeno traits or indeed life on Earth?
3) Inconsistencies with the Engineer size..... Alien attempted to portray a 25ft Being.... Ultimately the close up scenes showed what it was and thats a 12ft and 15ft tops Space Jockey.
Seems they realised that for Prometheues and the various Drafts and Concept work show us 10-15ft Tall Engineers.... when in reality on screen we see them range from 8ft (Ghost Engineers) and when David talks to the Last Engineer.... to 9ft tall (The Space Jockey suits both dead Engineers bodies and the suits hanging on walls). and then ultimately 7.5ft Tops in the close up scenes... i,e Engineer vs Shaw scene.
In hindsight i think they could have done the same trickery that LOTR and Hobbit use on the Hobbits to make them appear Small so make 5.5ft Actors appear as 3.5ft Hobbits to again make 6-7ft Actors Appear as 9-10ft Engineers.
4) The movie was butchered at the editing room, for some of it, its kind of like they cut the movie into pieces then left parts out and rearranged them, i felt this appeared to be the case when i first saw it over a year ago...
Then the leaked images of other scenes such as Elders, and interviews from cast members inc Sacrificial Engineers. Then the deleted Scenes and then images from other deleted scenes that never appeared in the deleted extras.
All confirmed as such, surely with all the footage shot there is a better cut waiting to be made....
Aside from that the movie was very good, so we dont get answers big deal i like how you get so much Ambiguity as it gives us cause for debate and the clues are so ambiguous that well no ones debate is 100% correct or in correct.
Yes i think some of the movies plot could have been better with so many missed opportunities, I for one would have loved to had seen David use the Goo to make him more Human like a Replicant and such stealing of the Fire gave him his wish to be more Human....
But ultimately it back fires when say he infects Shaw, maybe via Holloway who knows and she gets pay back by well her Baby infects David and he gets to produce a Xeno ish Organism...
But ultimately this would have maybe hinted more that the Xeno came from David, and so contradict they been around for a while... and then where to next? Surely a Chest Busted or maybe infected David cant get Shaw to Paradise...
so maybe its best how they did it, but i would love it if David does on Paradise find a way to make him more Human, but then gets infected that way at the end of Paradise, maybe after he nearly wipes all remains of the Engineers out and steals a gift from them to make him more Human....
But then we see something David unleashed then infects him...

MemberDeaconJun-20-2013 10:30 AMOh i think people should also check out Lindeloffs draft as some of the stuff left out really would have added to the movie, such as the better use of the Hammerpede, and ultimately it was not the Engineer and Fifield who killed near everyone off.

MemberOvomorphJun-20-2013 4:02 PMMy biggest issues were those listed further up. This isn't to say I don't find the movie enjoyable, just not the second coming of RS. What I was intending with this post was to see if there were others out there on this site whom felt along the same lines as I do, because, frankly, it makes it hard to have any good discussion if everyone just plays the same tune all the time.
I am really hoping part 2 (3 maybe?) will tie everything together to create a super sized sci-fi opus not seen in....well...ever really. Since, you know, trek and star wars are simply too watered down and don't really pose any real philosophical questions/ideas about humanity and our place in the universe.

Take a breath, count to ten...
I love this movie (clearly i wouldnt watch it 50 times and come to this site every day if i didnt)
This is a place to express opinions, not blindly follow the pack. If not for questions like this, you would neer have been able to fortify such a passionate defense of the film.
Lord knows we have all waded through your incredibly lengthy, rambling posts about Sumerian mythology, etc in which you offer 10,000 words of nothing but speculation.
Let this guy have his say, and stop pissing your pants every time we express an opinion that's contradictory to your own.
We all love the film, so let's simmer down and solve the (many) puzzles together.
I still love you ;)

David would never 'want' to be more human, imo. He feels (and he should) vastly superior to us. He even seems to have a strong contempt for human beings, maybe because we tend to disappoint. (Especially being that our dumb asses created him, that's gotta sting)
I just dont feel like this Pinocchio complex applies here at all. (And i for one am relieved because the idea feels a bit contrived and cliche')
I like to think David has a much bigger and possibly more sinister agenda. It may be that he thrives on information/knowledge of any kind, as he did seem quite pleased with himself while sitting in the Engineer's chair. (He even smiles a big smile)
It's as if he is relieved to have found a Superior Race he can actually admire/look up to. Sort of a Creator-by-proxy.
I agree with everything else you said though.

MemberOvomorphJun-21-2013 1:52 PMAgreed, @Flesh. One theme that appears in each of Ridley Scott's science fiction films is that robots/androids/synthetics cannot be trusted. David, Ash, Roy Batty, Pris, Zhora etc. all go batshit at some point and I believe that RS is telling us something about trusting technology.
