MemberOvomorphMay-13-2013 1:01 AMif David Cronenberg had made Aliens, none of this would have happened
I'm convinced
Had Giger's people put the artist together with the Canadian director of such body horror classics as The Fly, Dead Ringers, Videodrome, Existenz, Eastern Promises and Naked Lunch, we might have got something that was more related to the Giger paintings' ethos of biogeometry derived from visceral sexual union.
I'm thinking of the effect Cronenberg has had on popular culture: imagine a pre-videodrome world where no guns take on Giger-tube piercing format and possess the owner, imagine a world without the monotonous grey clay torture room of internet porn as depicted in the film, imagine video tapes not being stuffed into labial openings in cigarette burned torsos.
It's like Arthur C Clarke's geo-stationary satellite tech - ne had to think of it before some techs could make it.
And it might have been the SAVING GRACE of the Alien Franchise (you know, were it not left to James Cameron (who I respect as an action film-maker) totally ruining the xenomorph concept with the addition of an (unnecessary) Alien Queen to the mix (gosh, I love my nested parentheses (and I can count))) had someone like Cronenberg taken up the reigns of the wild Alien pony.
Imagine (after making Videodrome in 1983) Cronenberg had been offered part two or part minus one of the Alien franchise ... a chance to explore where the derelict and the space jockey came from and why no Queen was needed and what (if any) connection to the human race such a race of truckers/doctors might have. He'd have definitely set it in Toronto, or Vancouver, that day. He'd have unwound what we consider to be Society with one fell swoop - and hopefully he'd have had help with his scriptwriting (Dead Zone is the best film he's done, because he didn't write the script).
We might have had an intelligent ADULT 'xenomorph' series instead of a childish videogame series. Eh?
Any fans of C.A.R. or Cronenberg Alien Reboot out there? Totally redo the franchise from the Alien start point, with the egg-mogrifying Dallas scene reintroduced to the standard model and Cronenberg at the helm of a prequel/sequel?
Anyone?

I agree with the reboot of aliens as long as it remains canon to alien DC and that the xenos were still showing a human skull through the front of the head as the front part was see through.
I completely agree that the brilliance and horror of alien (DC) was never continued and that aliens never built on that as giger intended was never continued .
It would be brilliant if a aliens reboot could be made that should have been about exploring the origin of the xenos and the sj .
Brilliant post custodian.
But prometheus is coming from behind to do what aliens should have been about.
That is why I love prometheus.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2013 1:03 PMnice one,
I particularly like how you turned that one around with your last few lines -- ;).
THE POLITICS OF XENOMORPHY that would be a good approach, as I read Cronenberg's fascination with the mind-horror interface.

MemberOvomorphMay-13-2013 9:21 PMI vote we all agree to destroy any and all copies of Aliens and everything after it!
I've already started! It makes me so happy to smash them (especially Resurrection)
That way we can all live in a world where our beloved Franchise consists only of RS's beautiful direction and the whole (shudder) queen thing never happened.
(Mostly just destroy Resurrection please!! I can live with the rest!)
I'm serious- do it!

MemberOvomorphMay-14-2013 12:43 AMFV,
I totally agree.
Though Aliens was a rollicking BRAINS OUT adventure thriller on LV-426, that's where the PURITY ends.
Cameron TOTALLY BROKE what Giger's Xenomorph was all about. I know Cronenberg's a real fan of the biomorphic imagery, just thinking back to that pistol in Videodrome and the back-connector in Existenz. I'm hoping the plucky Canadian finds this thread somehow and wants to do a REBOOT of either BA or AA, that's Before Alien or After Alien.
He can do it on any humanoid-planet he wants, from any point in history or future. Just CANON i.e. the Scott/Giger Alien film only.

Couldn't agree more. The alien was a lot less terrifying and mysterious.
You don\\\'t see them fucking each other over for a goddamn percentage!

MemberOvomorphMay-16-2013 8:41 PMGimme, Custodian- I know you guys are dissatisfied with Prometheus, but I think its at the very least closer in tone and spirit to Alien than any of the others, even without the creeping terror. Agree with the Cameron comment totally. But here's the thing, and I've talked with Custodian about this before: A really proper follow up would be such a potentially bizarre and expensive film I have to wonder if it would have gotten green lighted. Aliens was a sign of the times, action was getting more sophisticated ( in large part thanks to Cameron) and anything but a massive slug fest might not have sold. Similar manacles bound Prometheus, I'd say far stronger ones now, but still, almost inexplicably, it got made. And, hopefully, opened the door for more.
Cronenberg is a great choice. That would be a very different sort of film. One more thing Prometheus did was open the door for additional parallel story lines. So dare to dream...

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2013 1:46 AMIn my little Cronenberg-Giger Universe, the ENTIRE CITY is made of this UGM or Universal Giger Matter.
It irises open doors in solid towerblocks, it can dump a xeno-soldier anywhere in its structure, it can blend with humans at the sexual level. Ganesha-like monsters could be fused with UGM to build/grow juggernauts. Pyramids of UGM could gestate in space to move whole colonies of xeno to other worlds - I kinds like the way (in Matrix) a bomb was 'thrown' by a hunter robot. Imagine a GigerPlanet hurling like a giant a massive flotilla of Xeno-seed into the cosmos.
On top of that, Cronenberg wouldn't shy away from either the sexual or satanic aspect of GigerWorld, this is the point I'm trying to make here. He made Dead Ringers (about twin gynocologists who data girl with a double uterus, ffs) and got Jeremy Irons to play the twins and Genevieve Bujold to play the patient. Man, that was a great film. Really great. Stunning. Sad. And a climax that involved insane and diabolical Giger-chrome Gyno-instruments of torture.
Cronenberg could do GigerWorld justice, is what I'm saying.

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2013 6:00 AMCustodian- never saw Dead Ringers, now Ill have to!
I liked that Sentinel throwing a bomb scene too, it was weird and unexpected. I too would like a UGM world with strange functionality. Keep an eye out for upcoming PARANOOBIUS chapters, part 11 in particular should give you a tickle.
