It was assumed he was either attacked or was being destroyed by the inflection of the black goo.Personally i believe the later, i also believe the infection is the reason for the pile of dead engineers. Since the the engineer was decapitated, the effects or progress of the black goo may of stopped. And when shaw and the doctor injected the engineer's head with the probe, the progress of the black goo restarted and its head exploded ( just like the pile of dead engineers).
The black goo has been described as a substance to accelerate evolution, sometimes with bad side effects particularly humans (fifield). Maybe the engineer in cryo sleep was infected with the black goo and because he was in hyper sleep the progress of infection had stopped (maybe he knew he was infected and put himself in cryo sleep with the hope he might get saved)
With the infected engineer being impregnated by the tribite, the results were different eg the large deacon. It was because of the black goo which was in the engineers body, thats the reason why the deacon was so big ( a double effect).If the engineer was not infected, the results would have been different again eg normal sized xeno.

MemberChestbursterFeb-23-2013 8:26 PMIm not totally sure on this thoery, no offense, but the engineer being infected seems somewhat likely to me. I dont think the goo necassrily makes a being's blood black but when the deacon bursted out there was black blood coming out of the engineer and still inside his body[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dm1gX6KVntU]as scene here[/url]
although i realize there was mostly green blood. but i did notice a little black in there so that might be a sign of infection

MemberOvomorphFeb-24-2013 2:35 AMI also agree that it was the infection from the black goo but i think it would make their blood a little darker. Its because when you drink something your body or the Engineers body would absorb the goo from their intestines straight to the blood. By that way it travels up through the circulatory first then spread like wild fire through-out his body. When they were making it or perhaps refining genetic material I wonder if they really knew the risks involved. Maybe it was something they overlooked or they knew it would be something that no one would want to even come near the stuff. im rambling but yeah, the black goo defintitely made the Engineer die by getting mutagen inside his body some how.

I am not too sure about a Xeno being involved with the outbreak on LV-223. As far as the bodies being piled up, I am of the opinion the last Engineer may have done it in an effort to quarrantine the dead/dying & infected. I am still wondering if someone had them infected as a test?

I wasnt saying that the xeno was involed with the outbreak . I was saying that the reason for the xeno (deacon) was so large is because of the engineer being infected.
I like the idea of the quarantine, it makes alot of sense. They waited at the door to be let in, but died there. Maybe there are more living engineers behind that door?
Im not sure about them being infected for a test. I had an idea about one of the engineers being sympathetic to the human race, and deliberately releasing the black goo to stop the attack on earth.

I have seen some explanations of the scream on the hologram as being the possible evidence of a xeno chasing the Engineers, but I agree with you. The Engineers are screaming because their heads are about to explode, it is not a screaming deacon chasing them!

I love the idea of the engineers being quarantined, it makes so much scene .If you can find a good pic of the pile of dead engineers . It looks like some of the engineers are facing the door (at the back), kinda looks like they may have been trying to lift it open or something.
regarding the scream, it sound human or engineer, maybe a fifield style infection.
