MemberFacehuggerJan-17-2013 10:20 AMWe have all known that a big question in Prometheus is 'Why were we created?' My question is this:
If the Black Goo answers the question of how, then what, if anything, is in the movie that can tell us why?

MemberChestbursterJan-17-2013 2:34 PMthe answer is in paradise. like shaw said, she wanted to find it to ask them why we were destroyed but i am pretty sure our creation will be backed up by reason by something in that world

MemberOvomorphJan-17-2013 2:51 PMLike David I would ask Shaw: Why Ask Why? She may have personal reasons to feel that confronting the Creators/Gods and ask her questiions.
Really will that change anything is Shaw's dwindling old life?
Is this a burning question on each poster's mind?
Maybe we all secretly want to answer this question but for me it will be enough just to see how our story plays out.
In thinking this over I can see how Shaw wants to see her future and reflect on her past life. Everything else has been ripped out of her Earthy life.

MemberOvomorphJan-17-2013 6:37 PMIt is a good question and a valid one. But it is also one that the movie leaves open so as cuponator3000 thinks, it may wind up in Paradise. I have watched this movie multiple times and all the extra material and the commentaries and even went back to the alien series to better understand this movie. This in addition to all of the postings here and other places as well as additional on line sources and while I have learned many things about this movie, that particular question remains open.

MemberOvomorphJan-18-2013 8:06 AMParadise will defiantly touch on why we were created but in Prometheus is there anything that can hint at why we were created i recall only one conversation between David and Holloway in which David asks his creator why they created him to which Holloway replies "we made you because we could." this lends its self to the idea that maybe the engineers did the same they were curious about their own God like powers and did some experimentation this may also answer as to why the engineer feels no remorse towards his creation and chooses to continue destroying the earth.

MemberFacehuggerJan-18-2013 11:20 AMI agree that David's answer may be all we get. I am really hoping 'why' is addressed more in part 2.
The Engineers may have created us just to see what would happen?

MemberOvomorphJan-18-2013 3:02 PMIn the beginning the engineers used the black goo for the creation of life on Earth and then in the end we see the birth of this new variant of xenomorph.
Then maybe it's the tool to plant life, and the effects depend of the type of DNA inside, and with this tool they can do whatever they want...even biological weapons.

MemberOvomorphJan-18-2013 3:04 PMBut surely @cuponator3000 is right and truth beyond speculation will be revealed in the sequel.

"Then maybe it's the tool to plant life.."(Goo)
Hmm Let's see.
*Plant Life early Man(Begins movie)
next
*Deacon at end of movie
Paradise
*Gods
It's a 1,2, 3 plan resulting in Gods

MemberOvomorphJan-18-2013 3:41 PMI don't know if the sequel will be explained in great detail everything about the Black Goo (probably not) but I think this movie may reveal the motivations of the Engineers to infest Earth. Also, apparently what the Black Goo does is transform, and not destroy.

MemberOvomorphJan-18-2013 4:52 PMWe, of course can only speculate about what will be revealed in Paradise. As I stated above, there is nothing in the movie that answers the question of why they made us but Holloway is of the opinion that earth was a great petri dish for them to experiment on. I tend to agree with him in this. I think they made us because they could. The same reasons that our scientists do experiments. We try to expand the breadth of human knowledge. Tinkering with the building blocks of life resulting in new hominid species would be a powerful means to answering the questions of what it takes to create intelligent life. Remember someone created them too. It could be a chain of intelligent lifeforms who develop the scientific capacity to generate intelligent life by using the biochemical and genetic tools that nature uses herself. Therefore in stating that they did it because they could, is a simplification of the underlining purpose behind it, which is to discover how intelligent life, including that of the engineers themselves came into existence. I hope this helps to provide a plausible answer to your question Cerulean Blue.

MemberFacehuggerJan-21-2013 8:14 AMThanks for the ideas guys. I will go back to waiting as patiently as I can for Paradise / Promethues 2!

MemberOvomorphJan-21-2013 8:50 AMPerhaps the Engineers are also waiting to see P2? And the xenos.
