MemberOvomorphDecember 26, 2012I guess it is a credit to the actress, but it is pretty painful to watch Dr. Shaw's ordeal. I guess that's a good thing tho really... I get the symbolism, few levels of it really, but still- she's like a pretty little doll. :-(

@nostromo001
we just have to accept that the xenomorph is capable of creating a survivable environment for the host until it bursts forth from what ever orifice it comes from.....well done, I like your interpretation :)
I have a pretty good idea of where it is. It's just down there, in the basement....

It is a nasty scene that, but a little too 'earthbound'. I was hoping for some really inventive and shocking (not just schlocking) deaths in the film. Think of the 'victims' in some of the paintings in Giger's Necronomicon. I think one step up, would be the alien death of an alien being in the next film. Something that would haunt the mind with an enduring afterburn. By 'alien' I don't mean that awful bloody awful term 'xeno', I mean truly ALIEN.

You got to give Noomi Rapace credit for undergoing the week of physical and psychological torture she did to bring that scene to life. Watch the Furious Gods documentary to see just what went into acting that scene. You also have to give the creature effects team credit too for creating that fully mobile squid. It is truly a remarkable scene that they knew would be analogous to John Hurt's first chestburster scene in Alien so they put a lot of effort to bring it to life and make it as shocking as possible. Previs also did a remarkable job in generating a computerized version to help in the final look of the scene.

The medipod scene still gives me the creeps!
My wife had a Cesarean delivery & it is not something I would describe as pleasant!
December 27, 2012
yeah it was reasonably realistic the iodine spray, the incision was a little wide but then it wasnt a "traditional foetus" and the staples were a good touch! realistic enough to have me squirming in my seat!

Noomi played the Shaw role quite well and the script called for a waide range of acting skills.
To me the ending really gave the Shaw charactor,,well charactor. With her determination she has nothing to lose when finding where the Engineers came from.
I do hope that Shaw's same mental attitude continues n P2..

I love this scene Shaw in Medpod it gives me creeps. But I can't still imagine how could Shaw survive this procedure, or at leas how could she stay in the consciousness...And how come she left-unharmed the Medpod, after plenty of liquid from squid's amniotic sac ran into her open belly. First of all, should't this amniotic liquid be made of acid? And if it's not, it will at least cause an embolia or seriouse reaction/inflamation which is in conflict with survival?

Well Ripley, I wondered the same thing regarding the amniotic liquid splashing into her abdominal cavity but for the purpose of the story we just have to accept that the xenomorph is capable of creating a survivable environment for the host until it bursts forth from what ever orifice it comes from considering it was impregnated in the human way, I am guessing it would come out the same way although it would kill the mother due to its large size. After all we don't know how much bigger it would have gotten before it forced a birth. It also may have simply burst forth from her abdomen like a chest burster. The acid is typically the blood of the xenomorph based upon past Alien movies. So we are forced to go along with the writers and RS on this one. As far as how Dr Shaw withstood the Cesarean consciously. she had multiple self injections of morphine (yes those syringes were filled with morphine clearly visible in the previs representations).

The more I watch the discs and listen to the commentaries, the greater the appreciation I have for this film. Also, their explanations of why key scenes were done that way became more obvious and logical.
The fact that Ridley chose to use a greater amount of real props and scenery/sets than CGI is even more impressive.
It is simple astonishing the amount of work by truly great artists it took to make this film.
