I was looking at microscopic virus & parasitic photographs & was struck by their appearances. One of the parasitic worms looked like a Juggernaut! My question is this: Is this just a coincidence i.e. 'a cool-looking design idea', or is the Juggernaut an infectious biolgical entity, itself? @Cerulean, great find! What's the name of the that little critter you posted? I believe the Juggernaut's design was intentional.

I used to raise c. elegans when I was working in the bio department at CSUS as an undergrad. I noticed caenorhabhditis' use of the moniker before. If you have watched interviews with H.R. Giger, he has a special distaste for worms. So its quite possible that he used it either consciously or unconsciously in his design of the derelict space craft in Alien which is the same craft that we saw in Prometheus. He probably has nightmares of them and has to take more opiuim to settle his nerves:)

CSUS California State University, Sacramento I just had to check as I not was familiar with this University. Did you raise c. elegans like others use white rats for testing? I am trying to relate the Engineers testing of Goo to human investigations.

Hey sorry for the delay. Just moved and got the cable to hook up a new internet line. At the time I was working as work study in the bio department at Sac State even though I was O chem. I just graduated last year from UC Riverside and am now a PhD in OChem. Regarding your question caenorhabhditis, I used a wire and managed to successfully raise the little buggers just fine. God its nice to be back on line!

Very good find, Cerulean Blue. People have been wondering where the design for the jockey ship came from since Alien. Not saying you're right but it's certainly interesting. It can't be the model caenorhabhditis showed because it was only discovered in 2004 but it has millions of cousins. It's actually a nematode worm, which "are the most abundant multicellular animals on Earth, in fact it has been estimated that 4 out of every 5 animals are nematodes." The worm also does appear to be a motif in the movie and can have religious connotations.

Don't feel diminished caenorhabhditis, I'm currently on unemployment so a lot of good that did me. I'm hoping for later though. Most of what I got out of it was learning to think critically and solve problems. Its like being a mechanic or geek who builds computers. You find yourself doing repairs on instrumentation yourself to save money for your professor. One thing I will say is that the scientists in Prometheus broke every rule of science, especially Melbourne and Fifield. Also Dr Shaw, cool as she was, was totally unscientific in her assessment of why the Engineers, as she called them drew those cave images. You just can't, as a real scientist say: I choose to believe it without anything to back it up. There Fifield was correct when he said Bullshit! And sure enough she found out that she was dead wrong. It wasn't an invitation. She was also reaching when she stated that the people who are shown in the paintings engineered us. Where is the evidence for that leap of faith? Or is that also something she chooses to believe. Of course bad scientists like bad soldiers make for good Alien or Prometheus movies. If everybody behaved like responsible and intelligent scientists, none of any of the disasters that took place in Prometheus would have happened. And David needed a damn leash around his neck. I would have kept that one in direct sight at all times rather than letting him out on his own. Dr Shaw is going to have her hands full when she finely decides to place his head back on his body in Paradise! He is a super intelligent menace that one is.

"... I would have kept that one in direct sight at all times rather than letting him out on his own..." David was more apart of this Scientific Expedition than anybody else. In reality he should be right by the Scientist helping them do their research and problem solving. Since David had to introduce himself to Shaw when she awakes that too seemed odd that a critical team ,member would be unknown to a project Director. I can only assume that Holloway also did not know of David before the trip./ In any case no Scientist question David on his actions(well maybe a few slight attempts like when he was fiddling with the panel to open the Nig Head Toom doors) Don't worry you won't be unemployed for long...The right postion will be out there for you. If not we can all enjoy reading your posts.

its tough ive been told if you want a job in academia what with all the cuts, i dont want to end up in industry though, you can see how ppl like fifield could be bought into a situation theyd normally run a mile from, and the others show i feel how feelings/beleifs can override even the best educated minds no doubt they were all very carefully picked for their characterstics which is why it fgures that theyre as some critcs have put it "the dumbest scientist to venture into space" lol

Let's dig up that classic horror movie from the late 1950's 'The Brain Eaters'. I note that Leonard Nimoy had a role in this movie. Hmm I wonder if an Engineer is also starring in it.?

Sounds like a classic that I will have to check out Indy! And thanks for the vote of confidence. Right now I am actually enjoying the first break I have had from academia or industry in decades. Industry scares me frankly. I don't want to be stuck working on some either meaningless project or worse on some unethical chemical enterprise that is bad for mankind and the environment. I pity those scientists who worked on MK Ultra only to become exposed accidentally - yes I actually knew of one who was my brother's wife's father. She said he was working on some kind of psychotropic compounds for the government and he was never the same mentally after that. Sounds like either MK Ultra or a parallel project to me. Same thing with the compound BZ obliquely referenced in the movie 'Jacob's Ladder'. That compound was allegedly used on troops on Viet Nam without their knowledge. But don't get me started on the history of black ops and conspiracies conducted by this country or I will be here all night. Back to Prometheus and the scientists within, I find it amazing what they let David get away with. He actually smuggled one of those metallic urns back and no one noticed in his set through mesh bag?!!! Granted he was busy saving Shaw and Holloway but in spite of everything going on if I would have been there and took even one look at him I would have noticed the urn glaringly obvious in his bag. Not one crew member noticed it! And after he pushed the first button triggering the alien recording I would have pulled his leash and had him attend me where I could keep an eye on him. Of course Knowing as a viewer how sociopathic his turned out to be, if I got too much in his way he would have used me instead of Holloway for his little experiment. Of all the synthetics produced by Weyland in the movie franchise, David may be the most dangerous although Ash takes the cake for being the ultimate twitchy hyperdyne A200 of all time. He apparently wanted to experience sex with Ripley but without the equipment to do so!!!

nostromo001 In the closing of your post you mention Ash's problem with Ripley. Doesn't David face the same lack of equipment problem with Shaw?

I see you dreaming caenorhabhditis, bad girl! And it did occur to me that David may have a synthetic equivalent to a crush on Dr Shaw and may be partially why he chose to eliminate Holloway, the only serious competition unless you want to count Janek, who also seemed to get around! PS did you guys see that out take of Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender ad libbing the scene about how long? About 16 inches fully erect, shorter when flaccid. They played around a lot on that set between serious takes. That was a funny scene. Fassbender also joked around with Guy Pierce - Peter Weyland while washing his feet. That line about pigmies...They must have had a blast making that movie.
