David's Four Minutes

David has almost 4 minutes of screen time being the only one alert while travelling to the moon. We see just a few bits of time within 2 plus light tears of travel. We really don't know how much actual time is transpiring. While watching this on screen I great a great sense of the power he must feel being responsible for the mission and crew and how alone iot was. He has been watching his movie, making his appearence more O'Toole like but more importantly absorbing the ideas and themes from the LoA movie. All of this plus reading dreams, learning languages that he must know will be useful and just letting his robotic mind generate questions about power, godlike power feeding his budding ego. It seems to me this was RS telling us who will survive this mission and who was going to be a cenbtral charactor in the next installment of the Prometheus story.

Perhaps, Indy. But Ridley also tells us that robots and androids cannot and should not be trusted. David is perhaps the prototype for all future wackjob robots (Ash, Bishop). He is devious and certainly not above lying to his human shipmates. So if he plays a significant role in the sequel I suspect he will provide both the conflict and the resolution.

Trust is a good word to use as there seems to be little trust throughout our movie. Weyland trusted David to execute his plan. Shaw trusted Holloway til he lost interst and hope in the mission and really checkout,,almost as on self destruct path. Vickers didn't trust anybody. I don't think David understood the concept of trust except in his own robotic mind he trusted that humans could be manipulated by his actions and words. Janek seemed to trust his instincts and his crew. So you maybe right thyat David is part of the problem and solution in future storylines. Why are we the audience able to see this but none of the charactors? Good or bad writing?

Perhaps a little of both. As fans we like to be able to link the dots, cross the t's and so on. However as a writer Lindelof ignores this and leaves alot to our imagination. The movie certainly entertains on a purely visual level but those of us who were hoping for a little clarity are left grasping at straws.

David is very good at hiding the truth. We can see what he's up to a lot of the time, when the other characters can't, so it's no surprise that David has them fooled for most of the story. Good writing.

Ridley, Lindelof and Fassbender have all said that during that time, David developped emotions and a personality because he was allowed to explore on his own. It would explain is resistance to being treated as a slave/object by the crew once he had has some freedom to grow on his own.

With David's multitasking abilities and he robotic curiosity working overtime he could learn much from each crew member about the human condition. It makes me appreciate, Svanya, Shaw's horror at learning that David had access to her personal thoughts, Do you think it was a two way street where David could manipulate each crew member's memories while he accessing their brain?
