I think we can all agree that there has to be a good explanation for the Engineers wanting to return to Earth to kill/mutate us, right? I was thinking the following: If we cannot understand, or find a good reason why innocent children & babies get cancer & die, then how can we ever understand the logic the Engineers have for what they want to do to us? In other words, could we ever understand a logic base we see as 'heartless'?

Think about how managers have to behave to be effective, they can come off as cruel without actually being so, because they are responsible for higher goals. Human fallibility can be an obstruction, human fallibility being a major theme here. I still think they were trying to create a self replicating version of themselves, trying to become a race, rather than a batch. I think they were doing this in secret, and were caught by their makers. Unspeakable carnage ensues.

it has to be personal for them they/he seemed so angry/involved more of an enraged titan than a supreme deity on the scale of things there were alot of hints towards them not being the 'gods' shaw was looking for, who knows maybe the sacrifice and thus our creation was a sort of punishment on the engineers

@major noob: nice post. I completely agree...particularly with the first 2 sentences. @caenor: im not convinced that any of this is personal from the engineer's perspective. To me, the fact that the last engineer on LV 223 had so little to do with the humans supports the notion that the engineers are acting objectively in their dealings with humanity. They've got a play-book that we (humanity) are unaware of.

Good question, Cerulean. I agree with your own answer.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

how can we ever understand the logic the Engineers I see this as an answer to your own question. We suspect they are logical in their dealings with Universe, seeding planets ect. What about the emotional attachment that as humans we have percieved as bring needed for a Superior race or even God? Except for the rage our Last Engineer shows he is all about completing his mission a logical anf almost robotic theme. So why would we expect him to be compassionate? Is that logiocal? As far as our own world the real world we see examples of destroying life for a higher purpose, Others may know the specifics but certain animals destroy or abandon their young to almost certain death all done for the betterment of their breed/family. If in our case the Last Engineer really saw the humans as such a destructive dangerous force it seemed logical to destroy our civilation on earth. My question is why didn't he do this deed, thoroughly, to the remaining members of the crew still on the moon infact David was still in the Orrery. David may not have been human but he still was a threat to the Engineer.
