The murals and gigantic head also suggest this in the film. I believe the Engineers science of creation/ destruction based upon genetics had religious or spiritual aspects to it. Its as if because they were playing with the stuff that life is made of they were like lesser gods and so they ritualized and spiritualized their science. That explains all the decor in the head room. Also consider the opening sacrificial ritualistic scene. That Engineer was donating his entire being for the creation of a new species. Placing this sacrifice in a theological context would provide it with meaning for the participant.
