Is there any medical or scientific basis for this procedure?

Only if you're a fan of Frankenstein and believe that the application of electrical current can reanimate dead tissue.

Herbert West would disagree

Say the trick works what would Shaw want to happen?
I mean since there is no body attached to the head(David can relate to that), is there an expectation that the Head could communicate to them without vocal chords/lungs?(David can also relate to this situation) How?

maybe its against the law to do that to people so they figured "hey lets pop the alien head in see what happens, no law against that!"
i think they have just been dyyyying to use that thing to see what would happen.

Nothing much in Prometheus seems to care about being realistic so don't worry about this part :O ...

Dr. Frakensteen did it so why not Prometheus?

Wonder if jumper cables would have worked?
I should reach the frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo....

this may possible ,we are in year 2093,shaw want to see how react the tissue with the spots, she belive its a disease

hey now, your thread is getting more bumps then my last one did :P
honestly i think they were just trying it as an experiment, it didnt seem like something thats been done and had some kind of results that would help them investigate alien life.
it may work with an entire body, be able to try to speak and move if it "tricked" into thinking it is alive.
yeah, a head without any vocal chords is pretty useless, but weyland was demanding them to "try harder" and they were all high on excitement so i think they jumped the gun and did it like i said, to see what happens.
they did a lot of stuff just to see what happens, like david's toddler like button pushing and milburn wanting to touch the alien wiener snake (although i hope weed had something to do with that decision).
so id say= blinded by excitement, curiosity, corporate pressure, and an open bar.

Some Russians did it to dogs at one point.
I think it's in the movie for a thematic basis.
Tricking the head into thinking its alive is thematically linked to David's head and the trick that he talks about when he quotes Lawrence of Arabia at the start of the movie. Furthermore, we've seen something similar with Ash and Bishop in Alien 3, but David didn't have to have that done to him. There's something different about David's brain, like Frankenstein's monster.
The deception part. The trick. Tied into David making people think he's less of a "real boy".
David's tricks are the opposite.
Making the crew think he's not "alive", isn't a real boy, or isn't developing real emotions... he's a decapitated head who gets to live and has a different brain than all the other androids... one with emotional understanding and a different type of behaviour inhibition...
I've been hinting that David is a lot like Frankensteins monster, and Weyland is like the Dr. Frankenstein of the future...
David can't be hurt physically so he doesn't have to hide pain.
He doesn't mind that his trick hurts.
He also has to not mind his emotional understanding/programming...

Belladonna- off topic re: the Hammerpede: to me it's very simple, Millburn was sealed into the equivalent of a bulletproof Hazmat suit. No way did he expect the squishy little blind thing to break his arm, bleed acid, reveal itself to be immortal, penetrate his suit and nest in his throat.

shaw noticed the change in the tissue on the engineer's head. she attempted to stimulate the nervous system in an effort to hopefully bring about some sort of change in the anomalous pigmentation (we know its a virus (or something similar)). In fact, she did bring about change in the virus/infection. the stimulation of the engineer's nervous system accelerated (reawakened) the infection....splat!
Its not like shaw was attempting to just turn the engineer back and on and sit down to a cup of coffee with him.

thats because apparently he isnt into weird animals as i am lol.
bella's first rule= if you must poke something, always poke it with a stick
bella's second rule= there are countless creatures on or own planet, land and sea that are dangerous even inside a skin tight suit... so creatures from another world have the poteltial to be as, if not more, dangerous. so dont touch it!
i want that summarized on my tomb stone lol. "see something weird, leave it alone. if you cant, then poke it with a stick".
i have gloves and kevlar arm guards for some animals i handle and some can manage to get some teeth or claws through that when they dont want to be touched. and kevlar aint no joke!
and i still blame weed, or he is just a duface and weed accentuated that.... because for an example i got a baby lizard last week and he is very adorable, small and cute and the next day he flipped out and went to town on my forefinger and drew quite a lot of blood, just because he didnt want me touching him at that particular time.
so... i dont see why an alien wouldnt do the same thing... especially a worm like one. a lot of worms (parasitic) like to come inside of hosts and some have beaks and will gnaw through skin in no time to enter your body.
also, the obvious threat display it put off, and it was striking like a snake. anyone that knows anything about ANY kind of animal would have recognized that as a defensive posture and action. it clearly was not amused and wanted to be left alone.
of course i would have never gotten near it, if it came near me i would have set it on fire lol. kurt russel taught us that lesson.

That poor old man poked The Blob with a stick and look what happened to him.
Millburn just seems like the type to assume he's absolutely safe in his little terrarium suit. When it initially bites him he doesn't seem too concerned. Of course that changes rather quickly..

that man was a FOOL, the stick was much too short. he had absolutely no eye for a proper poking stick and that was his downfall.
plus it was a f-ing meteor, forrest gump would have known it was hot and shouldnt be poked by anything, especially not wood... and that goes strait back to my rule of leaving unidentifiable things alone, no poking!
and mary jane slows down your reaction time and doesnt do a whole lot for feeling concerned. (none of the stoners i have known were every concerned about anything except being greedy with a doobie)
