Custodian
MemberOvomorphJuly 29, 2012I know it's petty and pathetic but the one thing that really annoyed me about Prometheus was
"PROMETHEUS HAS LANDED"
it's something everybody had been 'conditioned' to expect from viral clip after trailer after exclusive content after TV spot prior to the film's release, and I realise that 'some times some things get cut out'.
But there was just no point, for this cruelest cut.
There was space in the narrative, it didn't cut to anything else. There was occassion, they'd just landed. There was an opportune moment to rally We The Viewers around 'the game's afoot', the horror about to unleash.
The landing Prometheus spacecraft follows shots from outer space through the planet’s harsh atmosphere and onto the surface.
But no, Ridley took out this FUNDAMENTAL line. And that deletion gave the start of the film a really bizarre "SOMETHING IS MISSING here" moment. Like "Am I watching an honest version of the film?" here or something else? Anyone else?

I totally agree freeplanet... everytime I watch the film I wait fo the the line "Promethius has landed". It not being said (by anyone but my subconcious... as for audience involvement its a cheap trick, I creditted Scott for not doing through away stuff like that).
I Don't understand (and accepting Mr.L's lustreless and limping script flaws and holes and loving this cinematic treat all the same(works just as well as a silent flick!)) why a Capt. to a strange new world, yrs from Earth and forerunning his employeers wishes would not (for the crew at least) announce that the ship had touched down!
Maybe Janek whispered it to himself or more likely, I had pupiosley blocked it out in the belief that with no comfomation I could ignore it....... drat you Freeplanet! :)

Why would Janek want to ape Neil Armstrong? It's set in an era when deep space travel is routine. It was obvious that the damned thing had landed, so it was a reasonable edit if ever it was there in the first place.

">ZZ,
so then why the accompanying RIDICULOUS countdown, too.
Means nothing, logistically - you're either landed or you're not.
"Brace for landing prcedure," covers the act of getting ready to land, and the landing.
You don't hear the captain of a commercial airliner or oceanliner doing a COUNTDOWN, ffs.

Punx,
the Spaihts script might have been even weaker - WILL NO F***ING WRITER/DIRECTOR broach the subject of the lone alien's VAMPIRE-LIKE ALLURE?
It's clearly doing something in Alien whereby the victims are TRANSFIXED, nailed to the spot in awe - yeah might just be terror, but might also be some subsonic Seduction Wave, you know, sax-alien-ophone.

Why is a countdown RIDICULOUS, exactly? Why do you think countdowns are used on space missions? They're useful now, and they will still be useful in a thousand years.

oh Prometheus landed all right... but not the way it should have, sadly.

im very glad janek didnt proclaim "prometheus has landed" (agree with your comment zzplural). The slogan was just a silly marketing gimick...completely unnecessary within the framework of the film.

That reminds me, doesn't Holloway even say the "One small step" line at one point?? I think I blocked all the cheezyness out while in theatre, now I am having flashbacks...

@David 1:
I'll grant you that one. A lot of people don't have the brainpower to realise what a brilliant movie it is, unfortunately, and they contribute to the general drag on its IMDB rating, bringing it down to a paltry 7.6.

@zzplural: though i dont think lack of brain power is the exclusive cause for some of the prometheus hate (preconceived notions, personal aesthetics, group think etc. being some of the contributing factors), i do completely agree with the gist of your comment. btw, are you sporting a picture of gillian anderson (looks like her)?
@david 1 and svanya: it was clear that the inclusion of holloway's line ("one small step") was to further illustrate the brash and somewhat idiotic nature of his character. Shaw's response of "seriously?" was meant to echo the audiences' reaction to holloway's comment. It wasnt as if the creators of the film thought..."oh, this will be a neato, tricky, slick, and totally badass line to include". The reaction that we all had to holloway's line was what the writers intended.

Was that really Necessary, zzplural? Everyone has a right to their opinion, just because someone did not like the movie does not mean they lack intelligence.
And, pertaining to joeyjoe's question; I believe your avatar is Gillian Anderson, correct? I had asked you that awhile back too. People want to know :P

Well if everybody has a right to voice there opinion. Then all I have to say is this thread is sad. It makes no sense what so ever. Give me something that will make me think.

PROMETHEUS HAS LANDED"
I didn't miss this line in the movie.
I suspect it will be used to launch the DVD sales..
Be choicelessly aware as you move through life

@joeyjoe:
You're quite right. Holloway was high on anticipation and excitement. IIRC he even whooped at one point. So the throwaway 'one small step' comment was in character.
@svanya:
Yes, I believe it was necessary to say that. I've seen so many comments where people aggressively try to tear it down for completely spurious reasons that I can hardly think otherwise. In England, we have a word for aggressive dumb people who make loud noises: CHAV (council-housed and violent).
@both:
Yes, my avatar is indeed a representation of Gillian Anderson. Looking more than a little exasperated, I have to say!

Punx,
what is wrong with these people?
Do you remember Hercules Poirrot or Murder She Wrote or Sherlock or Morse where the detective would confront a group of assembled suspects and announce, "No, the murderer is..."
THAT MOMENT.
The omission of 'Prometheus has landed' after all the times it's been used in the trailers was just as if Poirrot or Lansbury or Sherlock or Morse has omited to name the murderer. As corny as the line was, I was really looking forward to it. In fact, I cried inside, a little, like a ittw giwl who'd had her ittw wowwy pop stolen from here by the school bully.
Imagine that, just the credits rolling up after the "murderer is..."
It can't be just me and thee?
LOL

@zzplural: G.A. is a complete goddess. She is everything that is right with this world. haha. anyways...are you a big fan?
July 30, 2012
@joeyjoe:
Yeah, G.A. is a fine woman And very nice to look at :-) Perfectly cast in the X Files, of which I saw many an episode when it was on TV. Haven't seen much of her lately, though. Might catch her in 'The Curse of The Buxom Strumpet', which is in pre-production. Now there's a title for you!

@zzplural;
Keep in mind there are people on both sides who have extreme views on the movie. I agree the uber negative naysayers have issues but I don't think it is a lack of intelligence. There are an equal amount of people that will claim the movie is a flawless masterpiece. Don't confuse those radicals with regular people who simply enjoyed or didn't enjoy the movie for more down to earth reasons.
