Just saw the movie today a quick review: - Too much. Should have cut some of the action for more character dev. - Loved the effects and the themes, and Fassbender was great as David Ok, my theories: Engineers as an engineered race, they share our DNA yet: - they are much larger than us - no hair - all of the individuals we see are indistinguishable (yes this could be an oversight, but...) - perhaps they are a cloned slave race/warrior cast of another race/species Engineers know conflict - both the xenomorphs and the black goo clearly can be used as weapons and appear mostly as weapons - the final Engineer has a propensity for violence The sanctum or tomb has religious overtones posit two factions/sects/whatever, Heretics and True Believers: - Heretics believe in using the black goo to spread life - True Believers see the goo as a weapon, and the results of the goo used in other contexts as abominations. The opening scene then depicts a Heretic - it appeared to me like the ship he sees in the distance is leaving. Perhaps he was a stowaway, perhaps he escaped, perhaps he deliberately marooned himself. And then he martyrs himself to seed the planet with DNA. (whether it is Earth or not seems unimportant). The Heretics keep records of planets they have seeded on their sanctum planet (LV-223). They direct their creations to this planet, and they visit their creations as they are able. I reject the 'industrial' accident theories, instead I believe they were attacked by True Believers who have infiltrated their temple and used the black goo as a weapon. The decapitated Engineer was running to the tomb/temple because the room was not only a place of worship but also a control point for the goo (the green gem?). The mural depicting the xenomorph is a warning about using the goo in the wrong way. (This feels a lil iffy). The Engineers depicted on the bridge hologram are True Believers. They have come to take the black goo stockpiled by the Heretics and the information on which planets were seeded to destroy the abominations. When the last survivor, a True Believer, is awakened by examples of these abominations, he reacts violently. Other posssibilities: - Over time Heretics became True Believers as they saw the black goo's capability for destruction (like any other technology) and have come to see all the results of the goo as an abomination. This theory goes back to the accident idea for the death of most of the Engineers. - The Heretics are a rebellion force that have been seeding planets with life, unbeknownst to their overlords. When they are found out, they send Engineers true to the cause to eliminate them. I'm not sure a definite answer is possible, but thoughts? (oh and also thx to the sumerian thread that I found very interesting )

Interesting indeed.....I like how you associated the mural with it being a warning.....amongst other parts of your theory

My own theory has some overlap, but I think that rather than being about 'heretics' in the normal sense of the word, it's that the blue space jockeys, sick of being woken to go kill and die and make more bioweapons, realise that their creators (the REAL Engineers) made a bunch of puny people who have free will, and are free to find their own purpose. They become resentful of this (in the way David also seems to be jealous of humans, who while in many ways inferior to him, are freer) We can imagine that the Space Jockeys are used to deploy these weapons, but look at the design of the ship. It doesn't look armed, and the urns don't look like they are set up to be simply dropped like bombs, and there is plenty of empty space on board the ship. I think one of ways that the engineers make war is to load up loads of these 'expendable' drones - (they can always make more clones later) and let them get impregnated with xenomorphs, before being sent out to explode near their enemies, delivering the nastiest little suprise weapon... which of course the Engineers can control and make dormant later using that green rock we saw in the temple. From the very first scene we see that the Grey dudes show little concern about dying, as if being alive holds no joy or purpose. And the mural on the ceiling shows one of them with a facehugger on it, with another humanoid next to it, that looks less muscular than the drones. It's meant to mimic the God and Adam painting in the roof of the Cistene chapel. But we see that their creator made these TWO creatures to serve it in differing roles.

".. And then he martyrs himself to seed the planet with DNA..." The Sacrifial Engineer seemed quite at peace after drinking the special Goo.(It does look quite a bit different that the Pyramid Goo) Becoming a Martyr may be his belief if becoming immortal. Becomming Immortal seems to be more of an ego driven thought than a search for a true believer just wanting to be in the moment. No I think the Sacrificial Engineer is selfish in his actions not self less which would be a true act of belief.
