MemberOvomorphApril 15, 2012A reccuring theme in Sci-fi is to have an onboard control computer, sometimes with a voice.
As we all know it was 'Muther' or MU-TH-ER or Mother (if you want) on the Nostromo.
But will the far more advanced Prometheus have one??

I couldn't agree more.

Yeah that could be one, but not sure exactly if HAL operated under these rules though. Anybody remember if this was the case?
I remember the theme is revisited in 2010 as part of an analysis of why the AI did what it did...

He clearly operated under his own rules from the day he became self aware...was an accident of design, waiting to happen, as demonstrated over and over in the film very very slowly with subtle reveals such as, just as an example, near the end, his revealing that he was reading lips.

I think the point is, you cannot utterly control any self-aware being. A person's thoughts, are their own. Psychosis is part-and-parcel of an individual's internal life and self-reflection. Those attributes are a requirement for any self-aware, individual identity, so it's a catch-22.......theoretically, of course.

Love the scene in A.I. when Professor Hobby asked his secratary Sheila, an android woman in his classroom to define LOVE...and she said...
Secretary: Love is first widening my eyes a little bit and quickening my breathing a little and warming my skin and touching…
Professor Hobby: …and so on. Exactly so. Thank you, Sheila.
and also when Professor Hobby says right near the end of the film...
Professor Hobby: "The greatest single human gift - the ability to chase down our dreams."

"..Creepy thing about that is David has been awake for the five years the ship has been in flight. That's a lot of time to tinker with a command operating system.."
THough I think that the time is closer to 2+ years of travel I think this poster has point.
You take a motivated Robot/Weyland and give them total access to all crew members, the ships computer systems and time to manipulate anything that the robotic thought processes van imagine and you got a hell of story,
Why trust anything displayed, any technical breakdowns. Heck Davids could, be the Director of everything that the crew exp[eriences and we see on the sceen.
That even sounds too far fetched to me,,but the opportunity is there to manipulate what the crew sees, thinks, communicates and even understands
I think there was poster that commented that the Weyland Company was used at the film's end to show ownership fo this movie.
Yes, That it. Prometheus is a production of the Weyland Corporation to keep earthings like us busy thinking about things in a diversionary way, The 'Truth' is that we are all being manipulated but can't se the person behind the curtian because we are too busy thinking.
Ir;a all good because I am enjoying the ride.
