Alien: Romulus differences between the early cut and the theatrical cut

As mentioned centillion times in his previous videos, Mike helped with the marketing of Alien: Romulus and he did get to see a very rough cut of Alien: Romulus many months ago. In this video, he talked about some of the differences between the early cut he saw and the final theatrical cut. The rough cut he saw didn’t have the best quality, had unfinished special effects, reused temporary music from previous alien films, puppets, and animatronics had wires and rods hanging from them, some shots were just concept art pieces, sometimes the Xenomorphs and face huggers would appear as JPG images on the screen, etc. That kind of stuff.
There are some notable differences/changes from the final film.
-The opening title fade-in of the early cut didn’t say Alien: Romulus, but Alien XX121.
-During the take-off of the Corbelan IV, Navarro receives a call through the radio that they don’t have permission to leave the planet, but she shuts off the radio.
-Bjorn’s death was a little different. After electrocuting the Xenomorph in its cocoon with an electric prod, Bjorn walks away towards Kay when suddenly he gets stabbed by the Xenomorph’s tail and pulled back towards the cocoon where he drops below the cocoon and all the acid starts falling on him.
-Andy after killing Scorched Xenomorph doesn’t say “Get away from her you, bitch.”
-The climax was a little different. The Offspring would go through physical transformation. During its confrontation with Rain, its body contorted, its shoulders changing and growing, its head growing longer, back tubes forming, and its tail growing longer, starting to take the shape of a Xenomorph. It was still a tall guy in a suit, with some unfinished CG work. And after being sucked into space, its entire skin would fall off, revealing a Xenomorph mesoskeleton. This thankfully didn’t make the final cut. In the final film, we did see its tail grow and after being sucked into space its skin was falling apart, but there was no Xenomorph reveal. Rain would also lose some of her fingers, this does not happen in the final cut.

AdminEngineerSep-02-2024 8:08 AMVery interesting! Thanks for the breakdown Nebula! I'm glad the sequence at the end didn't reveal a Xenomorph mesoskeleton. Although the part about them being told they don't have permission to leave the planet would've been a nice addition, I assumed it was odd they could just take a ship off planet whenever they want but aren't allowed to go anywhere else unless the company approves it.
