Alien Covenant opened in Japan with $3.1 million, not $2.6 million...

G. H. (Gman) writes in a previous thread:

'The World of KJ has finally translated the weekend actuals from Kogyotsushin. While the actuals show it made more money, I was sadly way, way off in terms of attendance.

Alien: Covenant opened to #2 with $3.1M. It fell to Dunkirk, which is in its second weekend. Alien: Covenant had an attendance of 138,297 across 694 screens. That places it under Wonder Woman, Ghost in a Shell and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but above Logan's opening.

Alien: Covenant is expected to finish its Japanese run with about $10M. That would estimate and attendance around 440,000. (Give or take, depending on the discount days.) To put that in perspective, anything lower than an attendance of 2-2.5 million is usually considered a flop.'

Prometheus brought $3,6-3,8 million during its first Japanese weekend and finished with $21,8 million in 2012.

My opinion: We should admit, money counts. Taking into consideration everything, $10 million is not bad at all.

everything = date of release, it's 2017, hatred spree, typhoon, etc. :)

The hatred is not bigger to AC then to Prometheus.

10 million is not bad.  20th Century will get 3.3 million from that.  But if it doesn't help the movie break even; then it is not a good result.

redguy, id say more people appreciate Prometheus and the path it was going down to AC.

But remember, the higher the attendance is, usually the more time it takes to putter out of theaters. World of KJ member was nice enough to answer some questions for comparison: Officially, Kogyotsushin has Prometheus's opening weekend at $3.6 million with 200,180 in admissions. That led to a final take of $23.3 million with 1.24M in attendance.

138,297 in attendance is a pretty massive drop. Unless it shows some substantial legs $10 million is the best that can be hoped for with a likely embarrassing attendance number. (Again, unless there are some significant box office price changes.)

It's also important to note that pirating is not a big issue in Japan. The laws against pirating are far more strict than they are in America--It's not that it doesn't happen, but it's not as prominent of a "market" (black market?) as it is in the States. Not enough to make much of a dent in audience attendance anyway.

Is that a satisfying number or not in this case?

Hopefully it will make some $ there so the chances for a sequel increase.
