'At some point in the development of the story, Davids living quarters was to be filled with instruments crafted from locally sourced materials. I suppose it ultimaltey boiled down to the 'flute' scene, but during the concept phase Ridley and the designer were right into basing them on real ancient items (hence the cluttered reference on every page).'

It's not odd that there were primitive like objects in his living quarters. 

Here's a question for you - How'd he make the paper for his drawings? 

Paper making is an ancient and time-consuming process, David has rolls of blank sheets, and a room dedicated to storing them.
