Alien: Covenant was amazing

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 6:51 PMJust saw Alien: Covenant tonight and loved it. Aside from two people talking next to me who eventually were quiet still the movie was a great sequel to Prometheus. The acting was great and the story was great too. I really loved Michael Fassbender's roles. He did a great job. He's a wonderful actor. I thought they paid enough homage to Prometheus too. I'm really looking forward to the next film in the series and hoping Ridley Scott makes it soon after so hopefully big box office numbers for this film. The score was superb too. Katherine Waterston was really good as was Danny McBride. The whole movie felt real and believable. It was definitely a step up from Prometheus which is one of my all time favorites. I'm probably going to see it again at some point soon. Thought I'd just share my two cents. For anyone who hasn't seen it yet prepare to be blown away. Ridley Scott never fails to really bring these movies to really high levels of perfection..

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 6:58 PMI saw it as well. Very good. I liked how they also payed omage to alien in it. It felt like an alien movie. I also liked this better than Prometheus. I would rank this as the second best alien movie to the original. The ending was great. Gore was good as well as the action scenes. I only have one small gripe which I'm sure other people will mention. Other than that two thumbs up.

MemberChestbursterMay-18-2017 7:25 PMIn minutes, how long is it before the crew get to unknown-planet? the space-journey was amazing for me!, since 2001 in few movies I have seen such a setting and quality of light exposure.

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 7:33 PMMy only gripe was the facehugger barely was on that one guy. That scene seemed a little messed up. The acid barely ate away at his skin which normally melts metal. Plus the hugger must of just launched the egg in his chest in seconds. I don't know that part just bugged me a little.
I understand them getting to the planet quick. You just have to go with okay two weeks passed etc...

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 7:37 PMI just walked out the theater. Meh. I did not find it amazing whatsoever; nor was "blown away". Some parts were better than Prometheus and there were moments that it was better than Prometheus and Alien Resurrection. I still find the first three Aliens better than this film. I think it is the aesthetic and that the DP does not know how to film dread and suspense. Derek Vanlint and Adrian Biddle were excellent DPs. I even give it to Alex Thompson and Darius Khondji who DPed Alien Resurrection and Seven. His recent movie The Lost City of Z is filmed beautifully.
My complaints about this film were the lifecycle of the Alien which goes against the other films. The CGI of the Alien reminded me of Alien3.
What I liked was the composer brought back some music cues of the original Alien that was composed by Jerry Goldsmith. Best score in the series. Fassbender was good as well.
All I have to say is that I hope the movie makes a profit, so someone can bring the movie back on track; similar to the last Star Wars movie and Rogue One. I saw every Alien movie in the movies (yes, I am in my 50s) and worked on a movie myself. Sometimes, a director needs to work with his writers and say, "this does not fit logically nor makes sense and we need to re-write the scene".
You go on IMDB.com and the majority of audience reviews are negative. Even from the British lol.

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 7:41 PM@colonialsoldier well that's why everyone can have their own opinion..I also think Ridley Scott might somehow make David the Space Jockey in the next film it just seems like he would take this route since he loves the David 8 character. David could always put on a giant engineer suit at the end of the next movie so who knows..

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 7:43 PMI can let the gestation time pass. These were experiments by David. So the gestation times can be different than the original. I definitely rank this as the second best alien film.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2017 7:49 PMTheater was dead quiet when it was over.
Underwhelming save for the opening action sequence. The rest rehash, and the slowest sequence ever in an ALIEN film with the flute bit. ARRGH. I'm ready for PIRATES....

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 7:56 PMOcean you do know the flute sequence was important to clarify why David was acting the way he was and cleared up why he acted the way he did in Prometheus. I thought it was pretty clear and helped tie up some head scratching moments from Prometheus as I said before.
In that scene David was pretty much made out to be the psycho model that they don't make anymore because he can think for himself. It's actually creepy if you think about AI.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2017 8:41 PMAgain, as I said before, I understand the sequence, the length of which was impossibly long, to the point of the audience becoming restless. This film could have lost a half hour and accomplished the same thing (which is not a whole lot). Terrible revisiting of the "let's blow it out of the airlock" sequence from ALIENS. C'mon Ridley!
I didn't hate it, I'm glad I saw it. But unlike the first two I won't go back to the theater to re watch.

MemberChestbursterMay-18-2017 9:18 PMAlien: Covenant was not amazing, it's extremely disappointing, glad for everyone who liked it or loved it, I'm just not one of those people. I don't know I think Ridley Scott has just lost it, lost his touch. I think maybe they should not continue with this so called Alien universe, please Ridley just stop now. Stop ruining Alien and Aliens and please stop with this David nonsense, he's a f#*k!ng android. Why do all these people keep getting outsmarted by an android, this is exactly how I wanted this movie not to go. I think everyone on this site for the most part guessed everything that was gonna happen in this movie. I saw everything coming from being on this site even though this is my first time being back on here for awhile. Everything in this movie was cliché, don't go off by yourself, okay I will anyway, nope bad decision. Who needs to see another person get snuck up from behind in a movie. How many times do I need to see a severed head in the water, you have lost your mind Ridley Scott. Every horror movie cliché and sci-fi horror cliché is in this movie, really original Ridley. Please don't make me see another one.

MemberOvomorphMay-18-2017 10:01 PMI agree it was amazing.
It is a very dark movie, very different from all the other Alien movies. This has a very strong theme of the super ego of David. I can't help but think of Shapespeare's The Tempest .. David being Prospero.
The androids dominate this movie. During the central 40 mins, it was hard for me not to think of Roy Batty in Blade Runner when watching David. Roy is striving for more life whereas David is striving to create more life.
Today I have been dedicated to post on as many topics as possible until I pass out from drinking too many beers.

MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 10:13 PMCurt here is a fine example of a victim of "over saturation." In this Age of Information that we live in, we are constantly bombarded with so much noise. Everything has to always out do the last entry. The kills have to be gorier. The scares have to be scarier. It is why many like him flock to films such as Star Wars, and Aliens with the big explosions, and tense edge of your seat suspense. People like this have a hard time with films like Prometheus and Covenant because it requires them to reprogram their brain from what they're used to and adopt another way of thinking. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Star Wars. I LOVE Aliens. But I also know when films present this need for a shift, and thus, I am able to enjoy a different kind of entertainment.

MemberChestbursterMay-18-2017 10:21 PM@microchanges Anything else, haha. People like me @Alien426 I like smart movies there is nothing smart about this movie in my opinion. I don't flock to movies, I like what I like. I've been watching Star Wars since I was a kid with my family and what does that have to do with anything. I'm expressing my opinion, if you don't like it so be it. I'm disappointed at the movie and I am allowed to say what I want to say. And please don't tell me that I have to reprogram my brain, what? I watch tons of movies, I think this movie is not good, deal with it.
splatterpunk
MemberFacehuggerMay-18-2017 10:24 PM@alien good point. First off all though Star Wars and alien shouldn't even be brought up in the same thought. They are two totally different genres. First off Alien is R all the Alien movies are R. Films from different genres are different and they are supposed to be. If I want to see blood and guts I'm going to a horror movie. If I want lots of cgi or tons of epic battles I'll go to a comic book movie or starwars or whatever.
I got what I was looking for in covenant. I got my blood, clarification on some of Prometheus, some aliens, a few jump moments, a killer ending, etc...

MemberChestbursterMay-18-2017 11:50 PMWishing more and more Blomkamp's Alien 5 would have came out instead of this.

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 2:32 AMI would say Alien Covenant is an epic Sci-fi film but not considered a classic. It seems there involves too much calculations during the production process to make it appealing to all fanbase but none of it really stands out.
Apart from this, I still think this film is beautifully made. Music, visual and acting are all top-notch. Really hope there will be a longer DC version in future release, and hope the Alien franchise never ends until I die.
And David's character is real badass.
I would give this film a B+

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2017 4:02 AMI loved it as well, but full disclosure, I also loved Prometheus. And like Prometheus this was so much more about the narrative than just the xenomorphs, neomorphs, what have you. If you think about it they really were not in it all that much.
it was pretty dismal however. They killed off the heroin of Prometheus, which was heartbreaking to me, more so even that David mutilated her so much, and more than likely the two heroes of this movie will face a horrible demise. And I'm not faulting the movie for that...it is brave to make movies that do not have happy endings, but to have your hero or heroins actions be fruitless in the end is a bit heartbreaking. The only part of the movie I did not like was the cheesy fight scene between Walter and David, it was a bit Mortal Kombat for my liking...everything else was off the wall bonkers and thoroughly enjoyable.

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2017 4:06 AMI thought the flute scene was incredible. Homoerotic and beautiful, wierd, science fiction at its science fiction best.

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 4:26 AM@Dr. Connors, I am totally in agreement with you on every post you have made. It is great that us as humans, see things with different eyes. Because I can't see nor agree with the people who loved this film did. And I been on the flip side as well; where I really enjoyed a film and many thought it stunk. My wife's favorite movie is The Fifth Element and that is far from my favorite movie lol.

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 5:39 AMJapes I'm with you on that. That terminator brother karate style fight felt really goofy in there. I actually like the idea of them fighting, but they way it was choreographed or something felt very out of place, like we were suddenly watching Batman or something. Haha, the only other super cringe inducing part for me was when the xeno Chest bursted out of Oram and it was like mimicking David, I thought that part was really kind of dumb, and that baby xeno was bad design/cgi.
Otherwise an enjoyable flick, I loved David, and I liked the creatures and stuff. I'd say it was just as good as Prometheus, but with more action scenes. I'd love some more Engineer stuff though, hope they don't drop them all together now. The engineers are the most interesting thing to me, but I was always in the PRO-metheus camp. :)

Franchise fatigue!
I just felt like I'd seen a lot of it before - crew being woken early, interception of a stange signal, change of course, visit to an alien world with a crashed ship, crew memebers get infected, alien get's on board, a cliff hanger, let's try and blow it out of the airlock. The most interesting parts (engineer homeworld, David's lab, explanation of how he created the egg) were all rushed and given far too little screen time. And the 'big chap' CGI was poor. It looked like a 90s computer game!
I liked the facehugger embryos though, and the homage to Böcklin's (and indeed Giger's) Isle of The Dead. And most of the film was shot beauftifully.
I'm seeing it again tonight, ho hum, perhaps I'll enjoy it more this time..

MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 6:45 AMI hate what this film did with the mythology. Just threw out all the interesting ideas presented in Prometheus. And the writing with David just didn't make sense. He has daddy issues. That's a really stupid direction to take the series. It's ruined. Thanks a lot morons who complained about Prometheus because Ridley actually changed what he wanted to do and ruined everything.
The first half of the film was a solid horror movie because that is what Ridley does well. But the action scenes were dark, not particularly engaging and felt very tacked on.
Seriously, David created the xenos and he can control them? That's effing stupid. He's an android mad scientist with daddy issues. DUMB!
We waited 5 years for them to throw out everything mysterious and interesting about Prometheus. I'm pissed.
splatterpunk
MemberFacehuggerMay-19-2017 6:52 AMI'm glad he changed direction from prometheus. Covenant is a better film in my opinion than prometheus. Prometheus is a better film because of covenant. Covenant basically fixed the train wreck that was prometheus.
I'm happy:)

MemberChestbursterMay-19-2017 6:53 AM@colonialsoldier Yeah man, it's tough when you look forward to a movie and you are totally let down. It feels like a punch in the gut or a punch in the face. Ridley said Prometheus was a mistake and he was gonna right his wrongs, this movie is barely a step up from the previous entry. Characters still do stupid stuff, let me touch this spore. Why don't they have some kind of space suits on again, like they take them off in Prometheus, yes this planet is like Earth but who knows what you could always breathe in or what could go in your ear, haha. Man, I need to watch Aliens so bad. As much as I'm not a Cameron fan overall Aliens is great never have I needed that departure, which was always welcome, from ALIEN to Aliens than I do now. Great characters, great action, great set pieces and I still love ALIEN but Ridley is ruining it. @PatientLeech Yes all the David stuff is dumb I agree completely.

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2017 8:29 AMI also thought it was just plain silly when David palyed the theme tune to Prometheus on the flute..
