How many colonists?

I'm hoping that someone "in the know" can sort something out for me.

I've seen and heard references to the Covenant carrying either a) 2,000 colonists, or b) 2,000 colonist families.

Which number is correct, and do you think that they'll survive to do any colonizing anywhere?

I believe Daniels says 2000 families is one trailer? Otherwise, 2000 colonists seems to be the most common phrase? If it's pairs, that would probably mean 1000 families?

Anyway, Tennessee and Daniels might save the sleeping colonists on The Covenant (sacrifice themselves) and these go on with David (thinking it's Walter). This might be the next movie (or the one after The Awakening)?
