What are your top 5 or 10 scifi movies you like that may not be well known? I am trying to get ideas since I have fallen way behind in movie watching. For instance, BigDave and ninXeno426 recommended Ex Machina and I watched and enjoyed it. I can only think of three at the moment but feel free to list your favourites.

1. Equilibrium

2. THX 1138 (early Lucas pre Star Wars)

3. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank MST3K edition (funny riffage and not a terrible movie on its own)

If any of you are into the "so bad it's good" thing, I recommend Starcrash. It's so stupid that it's awesome.

If that makes sense.

"so bad it's good"

Movies like these are routine for MST3K.

Yes @Jazzhands! definitely The Cube and Cube Zero (not the second one)

Deepstar Six (The Abyss' younger brother, but still a little gem)

The Divide (mainly because Michael Biehn is in it lol)

Tiwaz No worries about more than 5!

I have a story about Pitch Black. I was leaving for military duty for 6 months and my family wanted a going away party for me- it was an emotional time. My daughter and I went to rent a movie (VHS) and our minds were on the changes about to occur. We wandered around and saw Pitch Black- never heard of it but we picked it up just to grab some kind of scifi movie. I had zero expectations and was just floored by the movie. I have three DVDs of it- just in case!

@dk Nice one.

I watched Dune when it came to the cinemas, 1984. I was 11 back then an dragged my granny along. I was like "WOAH!", especially the sandworms. I wonder what my granny was thinking. Probly something like "WTF?!". XD

Top Sci-Fi movies for me:

Close Encounters

The Day the Earth Caught Fire

The Day the Earth Stood Still (Original)

War of the Worlds (Original, Gene Barry version)

Sunshine

Flash Gordon (1980)

My Dad loved how Michael Rennie portrayed the alien visitor was in the Day the Earth Stood Still.

Today I have been dedicated to post on as many topics as possible until I pass out from drinking too many beers.

NinXeno426 and Deep Space (sorry if I missed anyone)- Thanks to your name drops I went through my dad's DVD collection again (more than 400) and found Sunshine and not only THE Arrival but The Arrival 2!

MemberChestbursterMar-29-2017 7:11 PM

The Arrival is a good sci-fi film imo, with a brilliant Charlie Sheen in the lead role.

If you want some 90's cyberpunk, I recommend Virtuosity with Denzel Washington and Russell Crow as the villain who, when damaged, regenerates by literally absorbing or eating glass!

Johnny Mnemonic is another cyberpunk film starring a young Keanu Reeves.

Here is the trailer from They Live. I forgot Childs from The Thing is in it. Question- would anyone be interested if trailers from the above movies were posted to whet members' appetites? It could be a fairly tedious task.

Ugh The Arrival 2 isn't very good lol but i own it anyway(it was direct to video)Here's a batch of Animation.1.Akira.Final Fantasy The Spirits Within.3.Appleseed(2004)4.Ghost in the Shell.I'll be honest I don't love Ghost in the Shell nearly as much as others do.I read the graphic novel first and was a bit spoiled by it,the animated film just didn't meet my expectations,i prefer the Stand Alone Complex series. But i did watch it recently for the first time in nearly a decade because of the new movie and came out with a new appreciation for the film

Here's some more underappreciated batch on sci fi movies. The Last Starfighter.Pacific Rim.Edge of Tomorrow.Ghosts of Mars(that one could have been Escape 3)Elysium(Neill Blomkamp that one,not District 9,but better than Chappie)The Fifth Element(ok maybe that one isn't overlooked but it's still awesome)and Lucy.

BigChap72- Westworld is fantastic! "I think someone needs his mama" lol. Arguably the original Terminator in a way as far as Brenner's character.

Did anyone like Lawnmower Man?

All great lists, can't think of anything extra to add except that I add specific emphasis for Event Horizon and Soldier!

The Man Who Fell To Earth~ how did I miss it out...it's another Nic Roeg masterpiece!

The Hunger~ Bowie and Deneuve, in Tony Scott's classy, stylish shocker.

Xtro~ Ultra creepy British sci-fi/horror!

POSSESSION Andrzej Zulawski's intense, weird, shocking horror with Sam Neil and Isabelle Adjani.

Totally forgot about Possession.  That's a classic yo.  Very, very different, that one is.

Lone- Man Who Fell to Earth- I saw that a couple days after Bowie died. It was slow but a pretty interesting movie.

makes me feel good to see others who are connoisseur of classic sifi. When I have friends over and they see them on the shelf I get weird looks or a head shake and when my wifes friends come over they just laugh at me. but I'm cool with it. lol

they have now idea.

MemberFacehuggerMar-31-2017 12:21 PM

DK/Lone - watched Man Who Fell to Earth as a kid in the 80s.  It left a weird impression.  I watched it more recently and still feel it has a very odd, dare I say, alien, vibe to it.  Slow moving but the 'eye' scene sticks in my head.  I guess it's as much a moral tale about greed than it is a sci-fi?

Shasta - All my DVDs are out of sight (they just are - no guilty reason lol) but my bookcase is in full view.  There is a noticeable amount of sci-fi on it such as Iain M Banks, Asimov, Arthur C Clarke and P K Dick.  I get the same odd looks . . .

Thing is, sci-fi is just that - fiction about science related themes.  Many genres dip in or cross over as well.  For me, and I like other genres just as much, if the writing/film making is good then it's worth a look, surely?

I think it's the scope of sci-fi that really grips me.  Similar to fantasy in some instances, but even harder stuff like Clarke's work can build fantastical yet believable worlds . . .

There's trash out there, sure, but just sci-fi?  Na!  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say my generation and back it probably was seen as more 'geeky' or niche but I had the impression sci-fi was a bit 'cooler' these days?

This is what having kids and getting middle aged does to a man - we have to ask what's cool ha ha! ;)

Does Army of Darkness fit in as Sci Fi? It has time travel so I would think so. Another one for The List. Shop smart- shop S Mart!

I have so many DVDs that I have had to store most in big tupper ware bins and so they become out of sight out of mind.

Bowie was absolutely perfect for the role of Newton in TMWFTE. Nic Roeg saw him in the documentary Cracked Actor and knew he need look no further for his lead!

I've always been in love with Bowie, and that just adds to the fascinatation I have with that film!

airshaft_surprise- I sound like a broken record but Plan 9 from Outer Space is taken to hilarious levels in the MST3K version.

MemberFacehuggerMar-31-2017 3:48 PM

I laughed when i first saw Plan 9 dk, but it is what it is i guess and still is a classic, even though it is bad hahaha!
