Botanists: Explain Wheat

Per the trailer- no animals and such yet wheat is there. Can that be accounted for? I think Rick mentioned pollination in another thread and agree.

???

I'm no botanist but a quick Google seems to indicate that wheat generally self pollinates.

nin- Rick inspired it and it seems a fair point. I have not followed up with SM's assertion but seem to recall enough that SM may be correct. That still doesn't account for other foliage we see.

After this joke, I invite serious talk. (actually, this should be on the ear spore thread lol)!

Maybe they somehow pollinate in an alternative way;)

SM's statement seems true. That adds a new level of why it is there, how it got there and who put it there.

Engineers?

Possibly Engineers. That opens up many possibilities and reflections best left to posters like BigDave. I still wonder about trees and other possible plant life.

Depends if they need insects or also self pollinate.

The trees and a suitable atmosphere are there yet the team reports no sound- implying (to me)- no non plant life. I have no answer.

I've read that there was a lot of different plant life on Earth before there were any animals. Could be the same here.  Earth plants may be able to grow, but ultimately it's an alien ecosystem.

Good point SM. It also seems life on a smaller microbial/molecular level existed prior to plants (a goo of sorts?) Not to get into a big debate, but I wonder how many of these ideas will end up on screen.

Maybe the engineers were vegetarians? :) They learned us humans how to grow wheat about 9000 BC? On the other hand, the silence pointed out by Daniels seems to suggest that all the animals (and the engineers) were wiped out by the xenos (and other mutated creatures)?

Another thing: It’s still a lush planet with breathable air which would suggest that the engineers can’t have died too long ago (they would have decomposed and vanished), perhaps after the arrival of David?

iv often thought that during the times when the engineers have been visiting earth, did they take some humans with them to colonise another world n maybe this is the world they used? taking with them seeds for a sustainable food source such as wheat for them would also make sense.

It's not because it looks like wheat and the guy from the trailer says: hey, here is wheat, that it is actually our human Earth-wheat, if you know what I'm saying.

I know it looks like the movie makers are implying that the world was once inhabited with human-like creatures, but this doesn't have to be the case.

I mean this wheat-like plant can actually be or do anything if you think about it. Self-pollination what not.

could be anything but what I think ridley is doing is saying it is wheat and why is it here.

If David sterilized the planet with an attack of black liquid (goo) from the juggernaut, then Shaw's body wouldn't decompose on Paradise.

Type in Bible quotes regarding wheat and a lot of bible passages pop out. Some of them are interesting and might tie in with what Ridley is trying to portray with all his mythos.
