Passing the torch

Ridley learned from his mistakes, lets give him a chance to prove himself.

Ridley Scott is one of the most celebrated and talented directors alive. He doesn't need to pass the torch, but he can if he wants to. 

 That's exactly what what im trying say.Thank Myrrdin.Movie fan i do agree Ridley has learned from his mistakes.This film sat in limbo until he made The Martian,a film which he admitted revived his interest in science fiction.

Ridley Scott is presently 79 years old.  I don't mean to sound morbid but if he's going to make 2 more movies...he doesn't have any time to waste.  Has anyone heard about time line on the next two?  Real world not canon.

You know his age crossed my mind,but i didn't want to call it into question.The Martian proved he's still sharp as ever.I don't think age should have anything thing to do with it.When it comes to age the real question that should be brought up is who could succeed him,and im not talking about just Blomkamp.

As for when the next film is expected,i've heard 2019 but i don't know if thats a fact.

He should have called it a day after The Martian; end on a high (his highest in fact). When he is kept well away from influencing the script (and he is blessed with a quality writer), things go well. Because there is no doubting he can translate a remarkable screenplay into a speechless cinefilm. But he is helpless when that is not the case.

Some say his photography is beautiful, but beauty has to be more than skin-deep. There has to be substance and depth to the story otherwise it is a hollow, superficial husk. Beggers belief how he has any control over the franchise. 20CFox must have lost the plot (pun intended).

Let Scott stay in it for as long as he wants to. 

Blomkamp would be a big risk. So far all he's directed are movies set in urban ghettos with thinly veiled social commentary. Not in my Alien movies, thanks. 

Scott is still making FANTASTIC films. He, along with a LOT of other people, ESPECIALLY HR Giger and Shusett et al., made this franchise work. I agree there should be some sort of passing of the torch, but only when Sir Scott is unable to do it, and it MUST be a carefully thought out plan. To me, Scott's vision of the Alien "realm" is the only one. Even "Aliens" was too slick and Hollywood for me. Prometheus, for all its faults, was back to the Ridley Scott way of things, where they should've stayed.

Can we Clone Sir Ridley and keep him going forever? He's about the only one I would feel justified in cloning...

You know i gotta admit i didn't completely love The Martian.I certainly enjoyed it thats for sure,but it's not one of my favorites of his, certainly not on par with Alien or Blade Runner.Blomkamp is a huge risk primarily thanks to the District 9 follow ups.For starters I'm not even crazy about District 9 in the first place but it's still his best movie.Elysium is enjoyable,but clearly a case of style over substance.And Chappie i don't think i can say anything that hasn't already been said.That's why i think it wouldn't be a bad idea for him to direct one of Covenant's follow ups.Let him prove his worth with the series directing stories in an established story line before he makes his films.Blomkamp might be better with a quality writer much like what was said about Ridley Scott.

I hope we don't lose Scott before he's finished telling his Alien story. I can't think of many directors who I think could carry on the mantle in the same way Scott has envisioned. Blomkamp has my vote for aesthetic,  but in terms of storytelling - not sure.

It's not a question. In my opinion these are the two directors best suited for the Alien Universe.

I don't know about Cameron, his style is so bombastic and American. In terms of big brutal action yes, he's your guy but Ridley's vision of the Alien universe is more to my taste, there's just something otherworldly and unsettling about his aesthetic, a subtlety and artfulness Cameron can't match.

You can bet a successor or two or three have already been set, should the worst come to pass. And there's no point in bashing Ridley or his skills as a film maker, to do so is just juvenile. If he doesn't entertain you, avoid his product. Pretty simple.

Filmaking is what keeps Sir Ridley going, everyone who has worked with him talks about his vision, enthusiasm and boundless energy. He is a human juggernaut.

It's all down to attitude, by his own admission, on a film set he is like a kid in a sweet shop!

I think he will be around for quite some time, he is by no means finished when it comes to surprising us.

As a side note he gave up cigars a while ago, plays tennis regularly, had a knee op a few years ago.

I agree with a lot there except Cameron's sense of art, this guy also had a serious background in art direction.

Of course this is a matter of subjective opinion but lets not forget that Cameron designed the frickin' Alien Queen and altered the big chap design to the new Alien Warrior, among a lot of other things. I think he also designed the dropship and the power loader.

He is very good at art direction to say the least, even though I also prefer Ridley's art style overall (with a few exceptions)  

Looking at the trailer for AC, one thing that sticks out in particular is the Covenant dropship, it resembles Cameron's Colonial Marines version.
