What Is the Symbolism of Heads?

What Is the Symbolism of Heads?

There are plenty of references to heads in the story. The whole facility (temple) has a skull on the top pointing 90 degrees from the runway (why not facing it?). The skull could be the sign of a death facility (biological warfare).

In the ampule/ritual room there is a huge statue of a (human?) head. There also seems to be a figure on the mural lacking a head (hard to tell). Also, the engineer fleeing something and coming too late to the door, loses his head. Finally, David’s head is ripped off by the engineer.

Should this perhaps symbolize mankind losing its head (bringing about our own destruction, like the engineers)?

Hold on to your heads! :) Just a discussion about the head-thing. I suppose it symbolizes man's loss of reason . . .

Chli,

Is it me or does fassbender look like he is wearing a suit to match the floor at his beheading?

This head looks distinctly European, more so than the head in the ampule room.

Gibster are you referring to the oversized British Shnoz and grouper mouth?  You know what, I think its a dismembered Walter head.  Poor guy, Walter was my boy.

Thanks for the heads up.  I'll try and bring my comments to a head that make sense.  I don't want to blow your head up too fast.

Easy now, that's not where the direction of my comment was heading, unless you had a pothead approach, thinking the HEADer the better.

Depends...

Heads are used to showcase a State of Power...  both to showcase the Worship of a Character be that God, or King... but also used to represent the Power and Knowledge of something.

The other side to a Head (not Tails ) is to show Sacrifice and also to showcase a Token, Reward and Gain... so as in the form of Hunting....   you keep the Head to provoke Fear in those hunted...but also to showcase as a Trophy.

This topic has given me a right headache! ;)

The top pic here, the skull on the facility, have you noticed how it slopes back like the head of the xeno?

My guess is one or a combo of vanity, self worship or possibly the head(s) of a great engineer(s) from by gone days.

And being English, and having a rather normal sized shnoz, I take offence at the wild and unfounded racial stereotyping lol ;) (best read with plummy, condescending English accent!)

Looks more classical Greece to me . . .

I agree, Deep Space. It's probably the head of an engineer from the beginning, but 2000 years of wind and weather has turned it into a grinning skull (symbol of decay and fall?).
