"Aliens are "smart" because the larval infectant stage is of 'brainy' matter itself, and binds the nervous system while it 'matures' in the host body. While attached, it 'downloads' all existing information of the host, thus giving it a headstart in life. It pulls from this storage-bank of information while it starts learning life through it's own eyes - meaning it's still young and naive in terms of experience, but has some knowledge. Each successive 'birth' contributes more and more of the host bodies 'hox' genes to the alien offspring, which is why sometimes they look more human... the resultant of this succession is the engineers, the 'white guys'. This is why that species 'planted' human life - so they could use the aliens to cultivate more of themselves. The race of engineers seeks all knowledge, and eternal reign, they persist through billions of years with this as their method of ensuring prolongation of their species -> humans -> alien infection -> reincarnated white guys.
Ever wonder why the adult alien's skull is so elongated? its because of its massive storage potential - it needs the extra brain space for storing the knowledge of the person it hosted on.
It's all made-up anyways... to me, these ideas seem like they would fit the story-line.
Let me know what you think!! :D
