It is somewhat clear to me that Prometheus tells us a story about existence. But it tells it from the perspective of a Creator or Engineer.

"They engineered us" is key.

The "(what) they engineered us (for)" is the big question.

What do we know about these Engineers?
Are all of them Engineers or are only the ones we see at the start of the movie (not ignoring the ones in robes) Shaw theorizes that they were engineers, but engineers at the service of who?

We are not revealed where the sacrificial engineer comes from. We know that he didn't come alone and that he came in a Ship at least capable of FTL travel. The outpost in Reticuli at a first evaluation seem to be a terraforming structure that keeps working after 2000 years of zero maintenance. It makes sense to make a military research facility inside a terraforming complex in an isolated planet to do whatever experiment these engineers like to do, or NEED to do. The amount of time a machine works without maintenance speaks for the advancement and the quality of construction, how many years terraforming facility from Weiland Corp function whitout maintenance? In the other hand, if you are the boss of these engineers and in the conducting of experiments on creation of nanochemical weapons of mass destruction, do you stay still if no news are received from the outpost in 2000 years? I would dare to say that the pod-awaken-engineer is the last one to know what was really happening up there.

Are the same classes the engineers in robes, the sacrificial and the one in the pod? Note that te one in the pod have a biomech skin in almost all his body.

Maybe that skins is developed and adjusted to allow the engineers in the outpost to survive that atmosphere and it was not needed for the sacrificial engineer because of the more friendly atmosphere of earth. Maybe that skin is an biomech interface to interact whit the armor an the rest of their technologies. Maybe it is a military class tech to enhance their combat skills. Maybe is the result of hibridization with another species founded by their civilization mixed to gain some transhuman habilities. Maybe is all i've mentioned in the same engineer.

How much time passed since the seeding in earth to the event where all engineers in the outpost died? Would be correct to assume that these engineers are inmortal at least not mortal by means of natural causes or at least have a longevity measured in thousand of years? In that case would be correct to assume they manage time in thousands of years... Maybe a 35000 years experiment for them it is like a 35 days expermient to us.

Did they seeded earth because it was habitable? Did they terraformed earth to be habitable to then conduct the experiment? Did they sacrificed one of their own for a experiment or was in form of some ethical loop? maybe they thought that the sacrifice of one of their own justifies the mass killing in the future. They engineered us to their image... was it for the same reasons that we assasinate mices (Because of their 98% DNA compatibility and size and manageability) only better because we are 100% DNA compatibility? Were they expecting that some charactistic in the sacrificial engineer manifested in the subsecuent specimens? Whas the sacrificial engineer modified in this respect? I mean if any engineer can be sacrificed or has to have a peculiar characteristic to truly be a SEED? Maybe they were experimenting to find something hidden or encoded inside the bloodline DNA of the Sacrificial Engineer (Insert movie here)... Maybe they are "growing us" because they have a war o were at war and now seek vengeance on their rivals and want to know the effectiveness of this nano chemical of mass destruction when applied to a whole planet... Maybe they are not at war and only want to measure disemination distribution of the weapon to improve it...

Or maybe it was not an experiment. What if it was the last effort of a group in their society that thought their civilization was all wrong an decided to give themselves another oportunity in a fresh distant planet... (why worry and come in different times and leave their invitation) And maybe yes one of ther factions engineered us and then invited us but then that faction disappeared and the rest decided to cancel the experiment? Was the event that killed allmost all of the engineers in LV_223 an accident or was intentional? maybe someone didn't thought we deserve death...

Thanks to god we have so many interrogants... this is fun.
(or thanks to the engineers? mwa ja ja ja)

I think the Engineers, for some reason, see the xenomorphs as a very valuable thing, and not just as simple biological weapons, and that piramyd looks like a cathedral dedicated to that being. I mean, they wanted to create somthing new, and our destruction was the first step to complete that purpose.

Who knows, maybe they have done this before (on another planet with humanoid like us) and the Space Jockey from LV- 426 is evidence of that.

It is interesting that when David is on the ladder he touches a green sticky biological residue before he opens the door to the chamber with all the vessels of biological weapons in them. We also see all the Engineers with the exploded chests that are clearly from Aliens.

I remember what the Predalien was capable of after it had escaped from the crashed space craft. It seemed like it had the mental capacities of a predator.

I think the Engineers were trying to escape from Engineer/Aliens. These Engaliens were very smart and powerful and could easily overpower the Engineers. I even think that these Engaliens could easy fly an Engineer space craft.

I would disagree that the engineers see the Xenos as a valuable thing; but, not for the reasons that you would assume. I think the Engineers do not really like something that could easily kill them and they have no power to do anything about it.

This is a part of the movie that is really making hard to defend the better parts of this film any more. I just will not defend this film anymore as in the past. I find it hard to believe that these Engineers are so smart they can design the alien; however, they cannot defend themselves against their own creation. Then they make this big chamber with murals and all these other iconic symbols to show off their creations. I just cannot defend these horrible inconstancies in logic.

It is true that for historical record we make museums. We do not actually stock the museums with working weapons of mass destruction ok. The Engineers did exactly that in that chamber which would be completely stupid. This is another plot hole so big you drive an Engineers space ship through it. The Engineers do not respect or even look at the Xenos as their great creation. Xenos are just a weapon to them nothing more. And please do not come back and say that they did this so that we would find it and get infected. Ok this is what I would say. You build a military base that has all these WMD's all over it and you put buttons all over the place so that when anyone get on the base they can just push a button and release the weapon. Parts of this film are just comple SHITE! absolute awefull stupid SHITE!

At best the image of the Xeno may lend only to its usefulness as an iconographic image like we would have an icon on a cell phone. It is there for basic reasons and not some elaborate deeper meaning. Just because you see some elaborate and fancy art like depiction of anything on an alien world you cannot assume that it means anything to them more than what it would mean to them. I will agree that the chamber serves a purpose for showing record of creation but I am not going to agree that the Engineers revere Xenos as some great thing that they praise. Unless any of you are willing to praise your synthetic stuff. Do you really love things that are just a means to an end. People say they love this and they love that. It is all bs basically. Your values change as you get older and so do naïve notions. Anyone still have comb from twenty years ago that they still use and want to put it in a museum case. This movie has great parts to it but a lot of this movie is complete shite. Scott did this on purpose when his budgets got dropped. So did the plot and all the other thinking to make a real film.  I like parts of this film. I do not consider this a complete working film because there are too many plot inconsistencies.

The engineers don’t like the Xenos any more than we like our tanks or jets. They put these sets together to put something together that is visually interesting and hope you don’t walk out of the film. They spread the special effects apart just enough so you feel like you got to see a real film.

" I find it hard to believe that these Engineers are so smart they can design the alien; however, they cannot defend themselves against their own creation"

This is not too farfetched the Engineers maybe very arrogant in their ability, and a creation could turn against them. something they would never think would happen because of pure Arrogance.

We could use two other movies for examples of such a thing..  The Planet of the Apes and its Origins the Rise of the Planet of the Apes, where Mankind carry out experiments on Apes to make them more Human and they succeed, and eventually they pay for there experiments when these Apes evolve to be as intelligent as Mankind and take over the World (Rise of the Planet of the Apes Part 2).

Another is Terminator, which started from Mankind created new AI and Machines and eventually these Machines gain a mind of their own and overthrow Mankind.

The movie I-Robot again similar.

And as far as Alien Franchise goes, whats to say that Androids like David cannot rebel against Mankind and a Army of Davids then go on to overthrow Mankind.

These stories all revolve around Mankind advancing in Tech and Genetics to create intelligent machines or primates  Only for it t back fire on them.

So there is no reason that the same thing could happen to the Engineers with the Xeno...

But looking at the franchise i would like to think that the rebellion of such is actually taking place when the Elders creation the Engineer decides to rebel against the Elders.

As far as the Xeno being worshiped and purely a Bio Weapon goes... Redant i think that we do not have enough pieces of the puzzle to make any conclusions as a lot does not add up i can see your frustration.

But i think thats because we have yet to find out the connection, there is a bigger picture going on and it has to do with why the Engineers are created and why Mankind was.

Its simply not a case of we was created on purpose for the purpose to be used to be host to the Xenos, or even use Xeno to harvest out DNA etc...

Because for one surely a advanced race has a more better way to harvest DNA than us a Xeno, i mean why not capture like hundreds of Humans and just feed them the Sacrificial Goo?

Also look at how long the process to create Mankind had taken, its not a case of a short period and we do not see Mankind pop out of thin air via the experiment or Engineer Sacrifice, nope while it seems mankind had evolved to what we are 70'000 years ago.  The Sacrificial Scene seems to be set many Millions of years ago and near Half a Billion.

Then we see how hazardous the Xeno is and how risky, i mean ask the Space Jockey, ask all those Engineers who died on LV 223 some 2000 years ago... This Organism is very hostile and hard to control and contain and all that risk to create such a thing and all that time to create mankind to use as hosts....

DOES NOT ADD UP....

There has to be more to this....

It could be that the Engineers/Elders had lost the ability to procreate, it could be that at some point a Engineer had came into contact with something they found that Face Hugged one of them and they then carried a Xeno related Embryo thus the Engineer was pregnant to a degree.

Well it carried a Organism that birthed from it, and this in some perverted way and twist of fate made the Engineers look at this as some kind of Miracle as they had lost the ability to birth a child.

Maybe they started to Worship this Life Cycle, but not as a God, many religions worship and hold some animals as Sacred and some as pure Sacrifice.  The Engineers could see the Xeno as Indians see the Cow.

These Engineers like to dabble and experiment and i think they then attempted to carry out a all manner of experiments on the Ancestor to the Xeno. Maybe they even got there Bio Tech from off this Organism.

As i have said we do not know the full extent to what is going on in this franchise, i refuse to believe that the Xeno/Deacon is some kind of God to these Engineers, maybe they worship it?

But to me the Mural is a sign to the Sacrifice of a Organism to create something new and so not God, but a Mural to show how this Organism plays a massive part in the Evolution of the Engineers or their Agenda.

One of The Engineers quickly offered itself in order to fertilize  that planet. Quickly because one of the crue members get down to the planet, did it and the spaceship get away right away. Nobody wants to die like this, but in that ship they didnt have time for A REASON. They didnt have alternative, no time to waste-they HAD,they NEEDED to do that (fertilize) and the quickest way was somebody to sacrifice. The Prometheus get punished by Gods - Farthers - Rulers for giving the fireto people, Jesus sacrifised himself in order to offer eternal life to people. Both they help people, they think they help.

Prometheus - a member of Gods community- step away from the rules of the Gods, they thowhim AWAY from the community. This spacecraft -I THINK according to that analyses- they are seperted engineers, they step away from the rules of their society and fertilize the planet -earth?- . So, when the engineer later in the movie finds out the rebellion on earth, wants to reach earth maybe to see the human race, deside if it is worth living or to distroy it.

But this narrative follows that this Engineer ALREADY desided to erase Human race because he ALREADY saw that there is violence (Somebody hit the woman scientist which is SEXISM). So,not only human race is ILLIGAL (madeby some engineers rebels), but the outcome was a VIOLENT RACE that hit one another!
