Taking an estimated distance from Earth to the moon where the action takes place, 32 light years, the Prometheus must have been traveling faster than the speed of light. The journey took a little more than two years, I think, so the speed is something like 14-16 times the speed of light.
You ask for kilometers per second. The speed of light is app. 300,000 km/ s, so the Prometheus was going between 4,200,000-4,800,000 km/ s.

Or 9.45 Billion mph
I may be slightly off but i believe that's about right. (And yes, these speeds seem a little unbelievable, even in 100 years time)

My calculations shows me that the U.S.C.S.S PROMETHEUS was travelling at speed of 14.485766 times speed of light or 4 342 716.760672 km per second( 2 698 439.091127796 miles per second[in kilometers is exactly ,in miles approximately ])or very near to 0.039659806 LYSD(light year per sidereal day). Here are my explanations, I hope you understand
Distance from earth: 327 000 000 000 000 km or very near to 34.56 -34.57 LY(34.563927272608 LY exactly [9 460 730 472 580.94 km is a light year] )
Time to reach the lv-223:2 years,4 months,18 d,12 h,15m
So as the ship left the planet earth in early august 2091 and reached the planet in 21 of December in 2093(31.30.31.30),so two days more. Now 730 days,122 days,18 days,36 hours,15 min
871 days with 12 h and 15m.
*4 342 716.760672 *86400 ( 1 day) =375 210 728 122.0608 km
375 210 728 122.0608*871(days) 326 808 544 194 314.9568 km
4 342 716.760672 *43200(seconds,12 hours)=187 605 364 061.0304 km
4 342 716.760672 *900(15 min)=3 908 445 084.6048 km
Now 326 808 544 194 314.9568 + 187 605 364 061.0304 +3 908 445 084.6048 =327 000 058 003 460.592 km (only 58 million of difference ,that is nothing to the ship) so the ship stops just before reach it destiny, as in the movie.

So how did they bypass that as infinite mass requires infinite energy to accelerate ? Yes - 4500000 km per second is quite quick. But the universe is so big that it would stil take 6 667 years just to go from one side of our galaxy to the other.

MemberOvomorphSep-13-2013 4:56 PMA warp drive theoretically would let you fold space itself, so you don't travel so much as you are pulled or you fall where you want to go, and you can do so instantly. You don't become infinitely heavy, either, as your own speed never increases.
@Fleshvessel: they are seriously working on a warp drive today. While it's only in the early stages, they think they might be able to achieve 10x the speed of light. The engineers probably can do a lot more than, crossing the galaxy in a second.
It is theoretical physics and engineering, not quite science fiction, but in 100 years I'd say it could be fact. My point, though, is that a warp drive or a worm hole would be necessary to exceed the speed of light (or even reach it).

Apparently they have discovered ways to decrease the energy requirements significantly- bringing this, as you say, out of the realm of fantasy and closer to reality.
And with the ever-accelerating rate of our advancement; having perfected this in 100 years really doesnt seem very unreasonable at all!

MemberOvomorphOct-07-2013 7:53 PMI'm going to have to go along with Steven Hawking and be a critic of time travel, but I kind of hope that I'm wrong. You see, if you want to fold space you will also be folding time itself and light itself must also be folded. Since time seems to be dependant on mass and gravity, you will also be folding gravity. If you want to traverse space with a fold you will also be traversing time with a fold as well. If you could fold time then you could go back in time and kill yourself or your mother or some ancestor and then you have a contradiction. It's like division by zero, it has no mathematical definition.
Einstein proved that large heavy objects like planets and stars actuall distort light and space and therefore time is distorted as well. Time seems to change drasticly near extrmely heavy objects like black holes. I like to call it the density of time. I like to think that time loses density the closer you get to infinite mass and has infinite density in deep space where there is no mass or gravity. The density of time seems to depend on mass and gravity.
