Sacrificing one's life for the god of others is a recurring theme. First the Sactificial Engineer,,seeds a planet at his own expense.. Then Holloway...knowing that things will only get worse for himself ,,,and as a result.. his loved one, Shaw , along with the rest of the crew, are in mortal danger.. He says goodbye to Shaw and commits suicide by walking into Vickers' flame.. Then we have Janak ,after being prepared by Shaw to do anything possible to protect Earth, is convinced by Shaw the only way to indeed protect earth is to self-sacrifice(so to speak), his ship,,loyal crew..and himself by ramming the Juggernout We didn't see this trait in Shaw,,or(not unexpectedly) David,,,,the only Earth related surviviors known in our story. Can we surmise any connection between these charactors.that made a deliberate act to end their lives?

The circumstances dictated their actions. So, in other words, they were really left with no alternative?

Holloway spread his arms out like a crucifix. The Captain and pilots made a similar gesture. The mural in the Big Head Room features a Xeno in a crucification posture. Might be coincidence, but you never know...
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

I agree with Cerulean Blue. The circumstances dictated their actions. With respect to the engineers, however, I doubt they were sacrificing themselves for the good of anyone else, in any sense. They seem wholly selfish, and they don't care about us.

"..The circumstances dictated their actions.." Concerning Holloway ..It appeared that Janak and Shaw would both want to try to treat,,,or at least want to know what was happening to Charlie. If they saw the threat as real as Vickers did,,could they..or would they eliminate the Scientist.? I doubt it.. which show the humanity of the humans... At first I thought Holloway wanted to die becaue he was in so much pain..and change,,that death was a better alternative,, THis thread makes it more clear that he didn't want ro carry his infected body onto the Prometheus... I had consisdered the larger picture ..

@Indy John: My least favorite scene in the movie is Holloway's death. I wrote this and a few reasons on your thread for least favorite scenes, and I was villified by other members of the site so I won't get into that. Some people are just so rude, including zzplural, who has directly insulted me in a post not meant to do anything else. She is so condescending, yet she has taken to re-writing some of my own words. I felt the circumstances dictated everyone's actions because the scenes are all just quite different. What Vickers did boiled down to murder, even though Holloway wanted to die at that point. There was little cohesive about the crew, especially where Vickers was involved. She is a complete failure, and that scene was just evil.
