Prometheus Director's Commentary

After watching Prometheus on iTunes with DC turned on...I must say that Ridley's comments/insights were awesome. At one point during the commentary, Ridley mentions that all of the answers are there; there are clues everywhere throughout the film. He also mentioned that he hopes that people will dissect it now rather than write essays about it 35 years from now. Overall, a very good commentary. However, I do wish that he would have commented more on the deleted scenes and why they were removed...hopefully, that'll be on the blu-ray. I must say that Ridley's commentary has given me a whole new appreciation for the film. His comments also suggest that above all, he is still a visual filmmaker. He mentions that a lot of things were added to the film simply because they served the scene and that's it. It seems that every question that everyone has about the film (why did the Engineer do this or why did Fifield do that?) has a very simple answer: because Ridley Scott thought it looked cool. Granted, it may not serve everyone's understanding of the plot/story...but it's an answer I can support. That being said, I'm really looking forward to hearing Spaihts/Lindelof's commentary on the blu-ray...I'm curious to see how they feel about Ridley's visual enhancements that affected the story they were trying to tell...either to its benefit or its detriment.

OK, so all questions are answered. Hmmm, ... I guess that means the best humans can do with the most meaningful questions, is to first treat the "artificial" life form they depend on for the success of the mission as a freak-slave-teapot thing, and then second, answer this teapot's rational questions with: "I'm a human and you're not", na, na-na, na-na-na. OK, so I realize they are on the quest for the knowledge that "must be out there somewhere" regarding human existence. Turns out, the worst bigot on the crew accidentally names the answer and doesn't realize it. In fact, no one realizes it. Not even the artificial man who is trying to not mind that it hurts but is getting his licks in in the meantime just the same! I guess he had the very best teachers... Are we to conclude the Universe made us because it could, and the Universe is very, very, very busy going about everything the Universe can do. So somewhere (turns out to be here), there is life in the Universe. Maybe there is life elsewhere, maybe there has already been life elsewhere, maybe there will be life somewhere else in the future... None of this means anything beyond the fact that life is something the Universe can do. Too bad the rational mind of the machine (David) was apparently too clouded by the design/programming of its maker/owner to see the fallacy of the human pursuit in question. The pursuit of a shadow, a mirage, an echo in our minds. Is this Ridley Scott's answer to The Question? Well, OK, I'll consider it, but I'm afraid I do have to say it isn't as funny as, 42. Now, what's one to do with this insight? Sit in a corner and pout about it? Pull a Charlie and get smashed about it -- thesis proved but desired side-effects dashed? Going forward we could evaluate that which we flounder about doing for psychological/philosophical/theological comfort with otherwise no real value (i.e. no value whatsoever). What would we then do with the truly massive human energies freed from such mental boggling? We could discard such useless, time-frying activities and redirect them to productive pursuits and advancements. Yes, give our status-quo the heave-ho... What narrative would we now tell ourselves such to forge a scaled up and formative direction for human-kind? What narrative without self-deception or the defrauding of others? A big question we may have to stalk for a while to get a good answer. One caution I would urge. Let's not do what the Engineers apparently did, and turn our organic chemistry set into a religion.

"..What would we then do with the truly massive human energies freed .." This is a great question/observation..one that each should ask as humans don't realize the amount of baggage we carry each day. For me..once I retired .. I can't believe how much stress I was carrying from work..as I am much more calm as I go about my daily activities.. I now have time to check out the Prometheus fan site..
