I have seen many diagrams of Facehugger + Human = Alien
Cuddles/Trilobite + Engineer = Deacon
For a long time I have been impressed by the simplistic (compared to 1979 Alien) design of the Deacon, although it has many of the same components, it is just sooooooo different.
After Joking to my wife that the Engineer seems to burp just prior to his helmet closing over his head... she countered that it was like he was expelling all air from his lungs... I.e the suit breaths for him (its is part biotech if not all after all, so its base code may add to characteristics).
Could it be when the suit is engaged by the chair they become a singular organism. So in Alien the eruption that came from the jockey (assumed chestburster), could it be that the Original Alien was...
Engineer + chair = Alien.
This seems to fit to me for a number of reasons, there are so many elements of the chair in the original Alien's body and there are elements (which are similar to the Deacon) in both creatures physic which are of the suit. So from the suit(assuming it is attached symbiotically and thus alive) you get the rib cage and the angular line of the legs. From the chair and connection you would get Shoulder points (from connection witness in Prometheus) The pipes at the Aliens back (seen on the rear at a different angel) of the chair and the pipe design near its base) and the sectioned pipes beneath the Alien's ribs (a design along the length of the telescope). From the helmet the white of the inside/internal could translate to the off-white gums of Alien's inner jaw.
Whereas The Deacon has pink gums (no helmet) no pronounced mechanical design element (no chair or interface).
Is that why the Alien is so Bio-mechanical?
I don't know maybe I'm thinking too much?

AdminPraetorianJul-01-2012 4:34 PMI thought he kinda went "Ahhhh" as in "Awww yeah! Getting comfy in ma chair now gonna go do some genocide." And yes the suits are very much like what the Alien looks like, some kind of hybrid of organic and mechanic system on the SJ that was down to a molecular level and absorbed by the Deacon.

MemberOvomorphJul-11-2012 11:13 AMPunx it totally makes sense to me! The question I keep asking myself is why [i]does[/i] the Engineer need to merge with the chair at all? Isn't it just a telescope/navigational device for the most part? Please don't say it fires xeno eggs at the other end... =)
Some have speculated that the Juggernaut hull is continuously open to the vacuum of space. OK... so the chair/suit protects the Engineer from that, but why not just lock the damn door? But taking your concept a little further... maybe the merging of the Engineer with the suit/chair tech enables certain capabilities and/or superior response time. For for example a human pilot may respond too slowly to certain emergency conditions because of the fact that information must go from the console, to his eyes, interpreted by his brain and then that is translated into useful action. But if the pilot and the ship become one mechanism, we eliminate a lot of that inefficiency. We also eliminate the need to jump back and forth between manual control and auto pilot- this has in fact contributed to some plane crashes, I believe.
Any of you ever watch Babylon 5? I believe the show's creator borrowed these elements from ALIEN to develop the concept of the Battle Crab, the ships the Shadow race use. The ship is alive but cannot fly on it's own, rather, it must merge with the pilot and they become one entity. The process is not reversible, which is the impression you get from watching the first ALIEN- the pilot was fused into the chair and was stuck there waiting for the death by chestburster- what a horrible situation to be in:

The chair, aliens all are fiction and the creation of writers that are not scientist... no not trying to pick a fight but just want to point out the wasted energy trying to figure out something that made no sense in the first place (except it looks great on film...).
Now in reality, we do not know what FTL will do to the physiology of a person or an engineer. That said, would it make more sense to like you said merge with the living ship to not only inherit it's flight characteristics but also to armor one's self from the elements of deep space?

MemberOvomorphJul-11-2012 12:02 PMNo worries about starting a fight patch, I am an open-minded person and just exploring ideas. Your point on the possible effects on FTL on physiology is excellent because I was only considering the effects of space vacuum. I think other works of science fiction (like Star Trek) have conditioned many of us to assume that the ship will somehow magically compensate for the effects. =)
This could also be why the Prometheus crew has to go into cryo- not just to avert boredom or minimize resource use (food, water, etc.).

MemberOvomorphJul-11-2012 12:33 PMThere several documentaries that speculate about FTL, the enormous amounts of energy required to attain it, and the possible effects on both the flight systems (better have a great navigation system) and the shield needed to brush off even the smallest of meteorites in your path.
As a convenient way of traversing the universe there is nothing like it (in literature)... maybe in 200 - 500 years from now we may achieve FTL (although our definition of ourselves maybe radically different from what it is now.... possibly a soul on a chip).

This has always been Ridley Scott's modus operandi. As a result realistic, plausible connections between how certain things relate to each other is often secondary to say the least. Trying to find the logical relationship can range from difficult to explain to downright impossible.

David8 would of course be considered a technological marvel, but in the end he would only be the realization of "Strong A.I.", machines that can truly think (as we understand it). Now the movie takes place in 2089, which is roughly 77 years in the future- surely we would be seeing some type of artificially enhanced human walking around? Or am I being too optimistic? =)
