why kill of hicks and newt in alien 3

i love the aliens universe but why kill of hicks and newt in alien3 they were really good characters to just put in the script " o yeah they died in the crash" everyone realy cared what happend to them at the end of aliens (the second film) and then dead would have been better to have them in alien 3 any thoughts or views on this
