I haven't seen the movie yet, since I'm an American, but I was noticing that there seems to be 3 main reactions on this board from people that have seen it. 1. Ridley Scott/Giger fans that spray their gushing geek-love juices all over this movie with gobs of praise, especially for the visuals and sounds in the movie. Example Type 1 review 2. People that seem to have mixed feelings or be confused about how they feel. They may be in denial about not actually liking the movie, or "needing time to think about whether they liked it". This reminds me of the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace in that people seemed to be in denial and wanted to like the movie, and even had to convince themselves that they did, but we'll see if we hate it later. Example Type 2 review (The longer you read that thread the more Xenomorpheus seems to hate the movie) 3. People that hated the movie either because it wasn't what they were expecting or their expectations were for an instant "masterpiece". This may also have something to do with no real revelations concerning the original movie or because Prometheus disregarded specifics concerning Alien. Example Type 3 review and another one So, in summary, what do you guys think? Was this movie, along with the months (or years for some) of theorizing and obsession worth it? Are you going to move on? What are you going to do to move on? How does Prometheus make you feel? Don't rationalize or justify; just go from feelings.

Some people have an appreciation for "existentialist crap," as you put it, and may actually even enjoy it. That said, can someone post a link to where Scott and/or Lindelof specifically stated that this is part 1 of 2? Because the only thing I have ever heard them say was that if they were lucky enough to do a sequel, there's plenty of questions they could answer in it.

I noticed the denial thing, and the anger reaction as well. Like I have said many times before, I try to keep really neutral expectations so I don't get disappointed easily.

Lol! With all this expectation, its gonna be hard to meet it. Probably impossible :) The reviews ive read so far though, and the wiki plot, im sure its gonna be one hell of a trip :) Have tickets for me and my son on saturday and I know im gonna be satisfied :)

I think I am going to well-up throughout the entire 124 minutes. I'll be buried in a pile of soaked popcorn napkins paper mached into my seat like the alien drones do to those they've captured for a good face-hugging. ; )

You forgot 4... 4. People who saw the movie and didn't have huge expectations but are still pissed because the story was rushed and filled with plot holes, the characters were flat and underdeveloped and many only served the purpose of getting killed (aside from Fassbender of course), and there were very abrupt cuts between different scenes because they tried to compress so much material in the short run-time of the film. In essence, some people are pissed that this is just not a great film regardless of its connection to the Alien franchise.

And 5 i'm not the only one who liked it a lot but if you want an alien horror movie and a prequel its not satisfactory. it's more than that

The previous 2 posts are a good indicator of the disparity in the reception of this movie... Thanks guys for your honest opinions. Well, let me simplify (I felt the need to give examples for each class) 1. People that like the movie. 2. People that aren't sure how they feel. 3. People that hated it.

I skipped by everyones comments...no offense intended, I don't know who's seen the film...but I'd like to remind everyone that by what Ridley and Damon have said...this is the first part of two...its clear to me by their evasive answers....and when we've all seen Prometheus, we still haven't seen this whole story....pure Lindelofian.

Yes, I'm sure most of us are aware that it's to be continued. In that sense, are people happy that this story seems more like a television series episode? Having Shaw ride off with a new mission to investigate the Engineer homeworld seems a lot more open than Ripley blowing everything up and heading home in hypersleep. Are we supposed to tune in next week, same bat-time, same bat-channel?

We're gonna have to go through all of this all over again....aren't you thrilled?...Hahaha

The problem with Damon Lindelof is that when we get to part two it will be part of a trilogy and when you get to the third one there will be rumor of maybe a fourth film. And if it gets to the fourth film well then by that point everything is so convoluted and crazy that it turns out all the characters are dead and in purgatory and the Engineer was really a smoke monster and David is actually an immortal with a brother who is now a demon and...well you get the point. Lindelof is the master of never having to give answers because he always promises that they will come later in the next episode, or next season, or next film.

So, you might argue that that's a major failure in the movie; that it doesn't have that same feeling of closure, is that right? I never watched Lost as I don't watch TV, but I would definitely be frustrated by Lindelof if that were the case.

Lindleoff said if the film is great, it's because Ridley directed it. If it bombs, he says it will be his own fault. As humble as that remark is, it won't get him another shot with the fan club. I too am in the US, and feel a bit deflated over all the reviews I've seen- having not actually seen the film. At best, those reviews are mediocre. If they were all from critics, I wouldn't be bothered at all- but most are from members here on the forum that are negative. Kinda spooked here...

Drakeequation

MemberOvomorphMay-31-2012 3:22 PM
Yes, Lost never had closure and each season Lindelof hinted that we would get answers later. The answers never came and the show ended without us ever getting any answers to what was really happening with the island, what the smoke monster was, about the ancient temple with strange writing, about the large statue of an alien looking four toed foot, about the structure under the island with a strange substance inside. Actually when I put it that way, it sounds an awful lot like Prometheus...

It sounds to me like the choice of getting Ridley Scott to direct may have simply been a marketing choice so Fox could exploit people's fondness for Alien. Maybe Lindelof got the writing project because he was free at the time?

Drakeequation

MemberOvomorphMay-31-2012 3:35 PM
@ Xenotron well we should give Lindelof some credit, he is a marketing departments dream come true. He knows how to hook an audience and sell his story better than anyone. It is only at the end of the show (or in this case duology or trilogy) that the audience learns they have been swindled. And by that point, the studio has already raked in the money (remember Lost was super popular). I think Fox knew this and that the Alien fan base would go wild if told that they might finally get some answers into the mythology behind their beloved film. Lindelof was a solid choice to ensure that we all give up our hard earned cash.

When I go to see Prometheus, I'm not going all hyped up and have high expectations, so what remains to be seen does not end up as a disappointment. Sure I'm excited to see the movie when it does come out, but I'm going with a poker face and see what Ridley Scott and his cast and crew deliver.

I just came out of the movie. It's not bad. It falls way short of the masterpiece we envisaged. At times the plot and script are preposterous, at times they are awesome. Review to follow. Summary- pretty good movie with major flaws.

Xenotron

MemberOvomorphMay-31-2012 3:47 PM
Is there another film that you might equate it with then? From what you say, it doesn't seem like the movie has much staying power to become a classic. @Kanon - I don't think it depends on how you go in, it's more how you come out. At least, if you objectively critique it poker-faced and everything.

The original script had plenty of xenos and chest busters. Ridley didn't like it and went to The Lost director knowing what he would get. I never watched lost. I saw one or two shows and could tell it was existential crap. The only existential show I have liked was Seinfeld. I just don't want the movie to be Lost in Space.... As a punch line. By the way, I liked the movie Lost in Space, but everyone seemed to hate it. I only expect a good movie and from what I read, it delivers. Hell, a twenty year old had a panic attack in Paris, that shit is golden, or a publicity stunt. I am still excited about the movie and probably have to wait until August to see it here in Japan.

6.....People who haven't even seen the movie, hear mixed reviews and make their own sweeping judgemental statements about how the movie sucks and their so disappointed.....

Drakeequation

MemberOvomorphMay-31-2012 7:47 PM
I think calling Lost "existential" is a huge slap in the face of existentialism. Lost was commercial sci-fi crap that hooked naive audiences into tuning in week after week with the promise of answers to the big mysteries.

i never cared for LOST with the pretentious psuedo art-directing and "borrow from everybody and everything" approach,... As Drakeequation very well put it, people were duped and swindled... :)

Hey there, craigamore, Just want to point out that those are the 3 reactions that people have after watching the movie. People who haven't seen the movie aren't counted.

I hate it. A real waste, Scott ruined the Alien saga in a single blow. (a really open-minded forum, as my review has simply been deleted and my account 'gunter' banned without any explaination or warning)

my daughter (18 and a film student) went to see the film last night and was stunned by its visuals, story and horror aspects. she has seen alien once and never really liked it 'like watching scream in space' she said.i am a huge alien fan and have argued for hours with her over the film. i suggested that the critics had mix views on prometheus and that it was trying to please too many. she text me and said the problem with expectations is the time spent waiting. 30 years is far too long. she suggested that if Scott was taking the series in another direction then he has achieved it and her friends absolutly loved the sci element of answering questions with more questions. master class in film making. i am going to watch tonight with a different view on this.any views?
