yes... these people wrote this: "It is depressing to watch an expensive, crafty movie that never soars beyond its cold desire to score the big bucks." October 22, 2010 Full Review Source: TIME Magazine Frank Rich TIME Magazine Top Critic "An empty-headed horror movie with nothing to recommend it beyond the disco-inspired art direction and some handsome, if gimmicky, cinematography." June 4, 2007 Full Review Source: Chicago Reader Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Top Critic "These things no longer surprise or tantalize us as they once did. In a very short time, science-fiction films have developed their own jargon that's now become a part of the grammar." May 9, 2005 Full Review Source: New York Times Vincent Canby New York Times Top Critic AHAHAHAH.... I laugh for the sake of keping my sanity intact.

Alien has a 96% on rotten tomatoes, picking three negative reviews out of countless positive ones and using it as evidence for the inability of critics in general to recognize a good film is pretty dishonest in my opinion.

Roger Ebert has done nothing but compliment the film, and listed it in his greatest 100 of all time. This was back when Ebert was an actual critic and not '3 starring' everything like he does now. I recall Siskel and Ebert having at least one special on their television show regarding nothing but the craft of the film, and both were arrogant enough to not care what anybody else thought. As a film, Alien holds up well and doesn't seem dated at all, other than some special effects.

Alien is a masterpiece and every one knows it. That last review is pretty dumb. Of course theses things don't surprise us anymore, because Alien already did them 30 years ago! So I guess other horror movies don't have to soar beyond what they are, but Alien has to be something more than a horror movie to garner appreciation.
